ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1988). (1893) 1988 facsimile edition. 8vo (141 x 222mm). Volume 1. Ppxviii,366. B/w illustrations, map. Brown cloth, spine and upper board titled in gilt, gilt sportsman with gun motif to upper board. Slight use but good-plus. Volume One only. Reprinted from the first edition of 1893, edited by Sir Ralph Payne-Gallwey. A keen military officer and sportsman throughout his life, Colonel Peter Hawker not only enjoyed the challenge that technical innovation and adaptation of certain sporting guns brought him, he was also at leisure, with large, independent means and numerous people at his command. If he had a whim to go gun punting even in the severest of weathers, he was able to. For most of his adult life Hawker wrote a diary, extracts of which - on sporting subjects - were published posthumously. What his diary details is the 'gentleman's pursuits' in game shooting and fishing, with numbers bagged and techniques used, but also the social obligations of a man of his class and the fact that if he did go out punt gunning in the worst weather, he would suffer from a chill for the next few days, but then he could always afford the doctor! .

Abrasion, sticker ghost and slight tanning to dust-wrapper. Un-numbered copy. A modern reprint of the 1922 abridged edition, which was reprinted from the 9th edition, with a new introduction by Eric Parker. "The original edition, which led to the publication of the following pages, was hastily written, at the particular request of some sporting friends of the Author, who had recourse to the press, in order to present each of them with a legible copy. A few supplementary impressions also were provided, for the amusement and instruction of the inexperienced sportsman, to whom, alone, he still presumes to offer so humble a production. To prevent enlarging this work to an expensive publication, all needless embellishments have been studiously avoided." That said, this book is comprehensive, very detailed, and quite long, and principally about wildfowling. A classic of its kind with much on dogs, guns, punt guns, and shooting from boats and various other vehicles. .

Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. 8vo., xvi, 17pp. - 459pp., + 14pp. publisher's ads, frontispiece, plus 9 plates, 2 text illustrations, marbled endpapers, bound in good quality late twentieth century dark green half morocco over marbled boards, gilt decorated spine in compartments with raised bands, each with hunting and field sport motifs and gilt titles. A VG copy with some occasional internal light marks in a fine quality attractive leather binding. The 'sporting exploits' of Colonel Peter Hawker, considered one of the 'great shots' of the 19th century, were widely followed during his lifetime, and his Instructions to Young Sportsmen in All That Relates to Guns and Shooting was something of a best-seller. His sporting exploits were widely followed and often reported in The Times. He specialised in shooting, wildfowling, and fishing. Here Hawker offers advice on shooting in a publication that has been reprinted nine times due to its popularity. Forty years after Hawker's death, an Australian book reviewer stated, "Probably no book on the subject of sport ever enjoyed so wide or so long sustained a popularity as the Instructions to Young Sportsmen".

ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1830). (1814) 1830 6th edition. 8vo (139 x 224mm). Ppxx,480+32. Engraved plates, text illustrations. Rebound in much later blue cloth, gilt titles to spine. Stains to cloth, owner's name and browning to end-papers and edges. Good copy. A classic of its kind with much on dogs, guns, punt guns, and shooting from boats and various other vehicles. .

ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1893). 1893 1st edition. Large 8vo (145 x 230mm). Two volume set. Ppxii,366,ii,32[ads];vi,393,iii[ads]. B/w illustrations. Half leather. Handsomely bound in half tan leather (not recent), gilt titles, sporting vignettes & raised bands to spine, top edge gilt, marbled end-papers. Slight tanning & a few page edges roughly opened but a near fine set. What his diary details is the 'gentleman's pursuits' in game shooting and fishing, with numbers bagged and techniques used, but also the social obligations of a man of his class and the fact that if he did go out punt gunning in the worst weather, he would suffer from a chill for the next few days, but then, he could always afford the doctor! .
