'The work is focused only on ascertainable facts concerning the gipsies themselves. This is an examination which remains uncoloured by popular yet erroneous conceptions, and the author dismisses the then prevalent notions that gipsies were vile murderers, thieving vagabonds, "ditchbank sculks" and "Agents of hell".
