A towering figure of Roman philosophy, Cicero was a notable polymath, finding his profession in philosophy, political theory, oratory, law and as a Roman constitutionalist. Ahuge influence on the Latin language, his writing lead many to agree that Latin and European prose up until the Nineteenth Century was either a reactionor return to his style. As such, he is generally considered to be one of Rome's finest orators and prose stylists, with his influence extending over millenia, as well as providing valuable source material for historians of the Roman Republic's fall. Considered at many stages to be an enemy of the Roman Republic, Cicero was known for his bellicose political rhetoric, ruthless ambition and bold actions towards both enemies of Rome and its own rulers and Emperors, leading to his execution by Roman soldiers of the Second Triumvirate (the political alliance ofGaius Octavius, Mark Anthony and MarcusAemilius Lepidus)in 43BC. Here, his political and philosphical writing is translated into French and edited by Joseph Victor Le Clerc, Professor of Latin Eloquence in the Academy of Paris' Faculty of Arts, with numerous additional volumes of incomplete works and letters adding further weight and authority to this attractive Nineteenth Century set. There is also a volume providing an introduction, timelineand a biography of Cicero, written by Le Clerc. Each volume contains the bookplates of the Guille Alles Libary of Guernsey to each board and pastedown. In decorative half-calf bindings with gilt detailing and paper-covered boards. Externally quite smart, there is some wear to the extremities, joints, boards and backstrip, as well as, in many instances, fading to the institutional labels that are adhered to the boards. There are also labels adhered to the base of each spine and some strain to some sets of hinges. Internally, the pages are firmly bound and in many instances are bright and clean, however some volumes feature more prominent spotting and foxing than others, which are generally lighter. The text remains clear in each instance. In addition, there are institutional bookplates adhered to each pastedown. Very Good. book.

La série est complète pour cette édition. L'ensemble est en assez bon état montrant peu d'usure aux cuirs et aux plats sauf de l'usure relativement légère aux arêtes des plats. Un seul volume présente une fente d'environ 4 cm à l'un des mors. Les intérieurs sont en excellent état sans rien à signaler qui soit digne de mention, sans marques, inscription, soulignement ou annotation. On peut noter quelques très rares roussures et généralement seulement sur les toutes premières ou dernières pages.
