Da ich sehr eilig bin, so kann bloß um d(ie) Fortsetzung Ihres gütigen Andenkens bitten Ihr ganz ergebenster G. HUFELAND." ( 1806 wurde er an die junge Universität Landshut berufen. Die Bürgerschaft der infolge des Vierten Koalitionskriegs und des Friedens von Tilsit 1807 von Preußen abgetrennten, vom napoleonischen Frankreich abhängigen Republik Danzig wählte Hufeland 1808 zu ihrem Bürgermeister und Senatspräsidenten. Nominelles Staatsoberhaupt war indes der französische Marschall François-Joseph Lefebvre als ?Herzog von Danzig?, vertreten durch den Gouverneur Jean Rapp . Angesichts der laut Hufeland ?immer drohender heranrückenden Ungewitter? ? womit er auf Napoleons Russlandfeldzug Bezug nahm ? trat er im März 1812 als Bürgermeister zurück.Hufeland kehrte nach Landshut zurück, wo ihm die Professur für römisches Recht, Polizei und Staatswirtschaft angeboten wurde. Mit der bayerischen Regierung Maximilian von Montgelas ? konnte er sich aber nicht auf die Höhe seiner Vergütung einigen und wechselte daraufhin zu Ostern 1816 an die Universität Halle . WIKI).

Ampia veduta dall'alto del porto della città di Nizza, con costruzioni e panorama costiero sullo sfondo, una miriade di imbarcazioni e di personaggi, di piccoli particolari e di minuziosi dettagli, bella l'incisio…ne, lavorata nel dettaglio. L'Autore (Wurzbourg, 1835 Munich, 1868), di scuola tedesca, fu paesaggista, acquarellista e incisore. Dipinse ispirandosi ai suoi viaggi: si recò in Svizzera, e dal 1865 al 1867 soggiornò a Roma. Espose a Munich, Breme, Hambourg. In lui si riconosce il tratto inconfondibile. Esemplare rifilato in prossimità del quadro di filettatura (che è comunque presente), alcuni punti di ossidazione della carta (nella parte alta non incisa), nell'insieme buona conservazione.

Hochwohlgeboren müssen es entschuldigen, wenn ich etwa das Versehen gemacht haben sollte, Ihnen die besonders gedruckten Ankündigungen der Kreiseschen(?) Charten nicht beyzulegen. Sie scheinen nicht zu wissen, daß… 15 bis 16 Charten und 20 Tabellen für den Preis von zwey Louis dors im Ganzen geliefert und vielleicht noch einige opera Inpererogationis(?) hinzugethan werden sollen. ? Sollten Sie indessen auch so den Preis noch zu hoch finden; so würde ich doch bitten, mir die erhaltnen Charten wieder zurückzusenden, (bis dahin werde ich denn das eingesandte Geld zur Rücksendung liegen lassen) weil ich glaube, dem (mir persönlich durchaus unbekannten) Verfasser werde die Trennung eines Exemplars so wenig willkommen als Ihnen ein kleiner Theil eines solchen Werks besonders brauchbar seyn, und mir zu verzeihen, daß ich durch meinen gutgemeynten Eifer für das erste und einzige Unternehmen seiner Art, über dessen Nothwendigkeit, gute Ausführung und Zweckmäßigkeit im Ganzen alle hiesigen und auswärtigen Gelehrten, die ich sonst darüber sich äußern gehört, nur eine Stimme haben, vielleicht die Grenze überschritten habe. Die flott gemalte Landschaft stammt sicher aus einem Skizzenbuch und dürfte auf Geists Reise nach Antwerpen im Jahr 1861 entstanden sein. Eine freiere Handhabung in der Darstellung von L…icht- und Luftphänomen nach französischen Vorbildern, von denen er sich nur bedingt anregen ließ, ist hier zu beobachten. Aus einer Künstlerfamilie stammend, nahm Geist zunächst Unterricht bei seinem Vater, dem Würzburger Maler A. Geist (1803-1860). 1848-1850 setzte er an der Städtischen Gewerbe-schule und 1850-1853 am Polytechnischen Zentralverein seine Ausbildung fort und beendete sie 1853 in München bei dem Landschaftsmaler F. Bamberger (1814-1873). 1854 unternahm er zum Landschaftsstudium eine Rhönreise, da er vom Würzburger Polytechnischen Verein den Auftrag erhalten hatte, Landschaftsveduten aus der Gegend anzufertigen. 1855 kehrte er nach München zurück. Es folgten Motive aus der Fränkischen Schweiz und vom Starnberger See. Starken Einfluß übte die Malerei J.W. Schirmers (1807-1863) auf ihn aus, dessen Werke er 1859 in Karlsruhe studierte. 1861 unternahm er eine Rheinreise. In dieser Zeit schloß er Freundschaft mit H. von Marées (1837-1887), den er 1861 auf dem Weg nach Köln und Antwerpen in Koblenz besuchte und mit dem er die Reise nach Köln fortsetzte. Eine schwere Erkrankung brachte 1864/1865 eine Reise nach Reichenhall. Obwohl der Aufenthalt keine wirkliche Besserung bewirkt hatte, ging er im darauffolgenden Jahr nach Rom. Dort unterhielt er gemeinsam mit F. Preller d.J. (1838-1901) ein Atelier. 1867 kehrte er nach München zurück. Geist zählt sicher zu den bedeutendsten Landschaftern Mainfrankens, wenn auch sein früher Tod im Alter von 33 Jahren als Folge einer wohl langjährigen Tuberkulose die vielversprechende Malerlaufbahn jäh beendete.
