Some of my friends, dis-mayed with my lack of sociability, have urged for so long that I ought to have material for a book that some years ago I began to think they might be right. Whether the book would find readers has not troubled my friends; and had they made that discreet inquiry I could not have answered them. What writer was ever deterred by so base a thought? A book-like "beauty "-" is its own excuse for being." But a new author, concerning different aspects of whose subject-matter many books already exist, may need to apologise for presumption. What excuses can I offer for a new book about birds? A writer's own enjoyment of his task may excuse the writing but not the pub-lication. The desire to give permanent form to sustained work is natural, but insufficient of itself. To add something material to what is.
