Condición: Good. London: Sold for the Author, 1804. Second Edition. Octavo (20cm.); full contemporary gilt-ruled calf (sadly lacking upper cover), spine in six compartments, red gilt spine onlay, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers; vii,[8]-170pp. Spine rather scuffed, mid 20th century bookseller description tipped to front free endpaper; a Good, internally clean and complete copy, though in a compromised binding lacking front cover. Bound with half title (sympathetically repaired along gutter), with printed "Price Five Pounds" cleanly redacted in a contemporary hand, below which has been written in manuscript "Price one Pound." Half title verso also provides the printer's slug (Shury, Printer) and the note "From unforeseen circumstances the Author has been prevented publishing this Book at the time intended." This note appears in the first (ca. 1803) edition as well (see ESTC N312231). The title page goes on to list the contents of this idiosyncratic work as follows: "A fine part in riding a race, known only to the author. Why there are so few good runners; or Why the turf horses degenerate. A guide to recover them to their strength and speed; as well as to train horses for running, and hunters and hacks for hard riding. To preserve their strength, and their sinews from being so often destroyed; with reasons for horses changing in their running. Likewise a full account of the Prince's horse Escape running at Newmarket on the 20th and 21st days of October 1791. With other interesting particulars." Phew. Samuel Chifney (ca. 1753-1807) was a British jockey hired in 1790 as "rider for life" by the Prince of Wales. During the above-mentioned race at Newmarket in 1791 Chifney came under suspicion after finishing last in a race in which he had been the favorite, only to come in first in the race the following day. In the face of scandal, the Prince of Wales chose the extreme option of selling his stable.

Marbled Boards. Condición: Very Good. First ? Edition. Chifney (Samuel) GENIUS GENUINE.a fine part in riding a race, first edition ?, vii. 170 pp., SIGNED BY E CHIFNEY on inside front cover, signed by Thomas Erskine and James Robb on title page, book plates of J Thomas Erskine on inside front cover and Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester on end paper, contemporary notes in pencil concerning the story of Chifney and Escape, see below, original price of £5 crossed out in ink and replaced with Price One Pound, original marbled boards, spine with paper label, edges uncut, preserved in modern cream calf-backed marbled drop backed case, spine gilt with racing motifs, Sold for the Author, 232 Piccadilly, and nowhere else, 1804. The events described in this book took place in 1791 when Samuel Chifney, who had been retained by the Prince of Wales to be his rider for life at a salary of £200 per annum, lost a race he was expected to win on the Prince's best horse Escape. The following day on the same horse and against the same field he won at considerably longer odds. Although his explanation was accepted by the Prince it was not by the Jockey Club. This book is an attempt to exonerate himself. The date of publication is of some doubt with some authorities claiming it to have been published as early as 1795. The note on the the reverse of the half title states that "From unforeseen circumstances the author has been prevented publishing this Book at the time intended." The book describes events upto 1803 so it would appear strange if indeed the book had been published in 1795. Size: 8vo. Signed by Author(s). Horse Racing.

Bound without half title in 20th-century quarter tree calf over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt; head & tail of spine sl. chipped. Samuel Chifney, 1753-1807, was an English horsemen and the retained jockey of the Prince of Wales (later George IV). He had a distinguished career riding for the Duke of Bedford and Lord Egremont winning both the Epsom Derby and The Oaks many times before he was hired by the Prince in 1790. After only a year in the Prince's service, Chifney was involved in a scandal at Newmarket for losing his first and winning his second race on the same horse, Escape. He had placed a wager on his second race and not his first, leading the Jockey Club to conclude that he had thrown the first race deliberately in order to increase the odds and therefore his profit on the second. Chifney denied the charges but his reputation was ruined; despite inventing a bit that is still named after him today, he died in Fleet Prison after going into debt trying to market his invention. This work, which was first published c.1795, outlines not only his distinct riding and training style but also his account of the Escape scandal.

Second Edition, with half-title. Printed by D.N. Shury, Printer, Berwick Street, London. vii, [3], [11]-170 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Samuel Chifney (1753?-1807), inventor of the Chifney bit, was a prominent jockey and trainer, and, states the DNB, "He was long considered the best horseman of his time". In 1790 he was engaged as "rider for life" by the Prince of Wales (later George IV), and on October 20, 1791, rode the Prince's horse, Escape, at Newmarket, narrowly losing, although the Prince, not having placed a bet, was not out of pocket. The following day, under Chifney, Escape won: this time, both the Prince and Chifney had placed bets, and the Prince realized a substantial sum. Chifney was called before the Jockey Club, but nothing was proved against him. However, as the result of a resolution by the Club, the Prince sold his stud and left the turf. Chifney continued to race, but in 1806 he left Newmarket for London and never returned, dying in poverty the following year. In 1795 Chifney published this book in an attempt to clear his name and to raise money--the work of 170 pages in wrappers was priced at an extraordinary five pounds. This second edition appeared in 1804 and was still priced £5/ as stated here on the half-title (the price has been struck through ink and re-priced one pound). A VERY RARE WORK, DEALING WITH ONE OF THE CENTURY'S GREATEST RACING SCANDALS. DNB; Podeschi, Horse and Horsemanship, 80; Loder 1038 Contemporary half black calf and marbled boards. Bookplate of Kenneth Baker Schley. Minor rubbing, near fine vii, [3], [11]-170 pp. 1 vols. 8vo Second Edition, with half-title. Printed by D.N. Shury, Printer, Berwick Street, London.
