X-Men #101 ("Like a Phoenix, from the Ashes") features the first appearance of Jean Grey's supremely powerful alter ego, Phoenix. In the story, Jean Grey is piloting the X-Men's space shuttle back to earth when a deadly solar flare causes her to attempt an emergency landing in NYC. The shuttle crashes into Jamaica Bay, and Jean Grey emerges from the water in a new outfit, declaring, "Hear me, X-Men! No longer am I the woman you knew! I am fire! And life incarnate! Now and forever - I am PHOENIX!" Additionally, this is the first X-Men comic in which Wolverine acknowledges having romantic feelings for Jean Grey - an important throughline in the series.…
