Original Wrappers. Condición: Fine. First Edition. Penciled by Dave Cockrum. Inks by Frank Chiaramonte. First edition, first printing. Publisher's pictorial wrappers, with a colorful illustration by Dave Cockrum of the Phoenix Force emerging from the water, with Cyclops, Storm, and Nightcrawler also pictured to front panel, lettered in yellow, red, and white, and Spalding advertisement to rear wrapper. Encased in a CGC slab, with a grade of 9.0 and the only condition note being "White pages." Fine, with bright and clean wrappers. Overall, a standout copy of this notable X-Men installment. X-Men #101 ("Like a Phoenix, from the Ashes") features the first appearance of Jean Grey's supremely powerful alter ego, Phoenix. In the story, Jean Grey is piloting the X-Men's space shuttle back to earth when a deadly solar flare causes her to attempt an emergency landing in NYC. The shuttle crashes into Jamaica Bay, and Jean Grey emerges from the water in a new outfit, declaring, "Hear me, X-Men! No longer am I the woman you knew! I am fire! And life incarnate! Now and forever - I am PHOENIX!" Additionally, this is the first X-Men comic in which Wolverine acknowledges having romantic feelings for Jean Grey - an important throughline in the series.
