Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Fine. This illustrated children's book, How They Live, was written and illustrated by Yevgeny Ivanovich Charushin (19011965), one of the most original and influential figures in Soviet children's literature and book illustration. The work reflects Charushin's lifelong fascination with the natural world and… his unique ability to observe and convey animal life with warmth, humour, and emotional truth. Charushin began his career as an artist before turning to children's literature, and this dual background shaped his distinctive creative voice. Unlike many illustrators of his time, he avoided decorative idealisation, instead focusing on the individuality and behaviour of animals. His drawings are characterised by soft, tactile lines, a restrained colour palette, and a remarkable sense of movement, allowing animals to appear lively, vulnerable, and recognisably real. Charushin believed that children should encounter nature honestly and empathetically, a principle that informed both his visual style and his writing. As an author, Charushin favoured simple, direct language that closely follows the rhythms of spoken speech. His texts often describe everyday moments in the lives of animals, encouraging young readers to observe, compare, and understand rather than merely consume a story. This approach aligned with progressive educational ideas of the early Soviet period, which emphasised curiosity, observation, and respect for the natural environment. Charushin's books were widely read and used both at home and in educational settings, shaping the visual and literary sensibilities of generations of children. Charushin's contribution to Soviet book art extended beyond his own publications. He was closely associated with the Leningrad school of illustration and collaborated with leading publishers throughout his career. His influence can be traced in the work of later illustrators who adopted his emphasis on expressiveness, emotional restraint, and close observation of nature.
