'The private correspondence of a set of persons who were all more or less obscure in their day' but justified by 'the intrinsic quality of the letters themselves.' Reprints 178 letters of five Benenden residents or visitors, Richard Waite Cox, written, 1753-1778 and 1779-82, Jean de Caulier, a French tutor, 1779-80, The Clevelands, 1782-1802 and William Ward, 1803-1821. Some of the letters refer to national and international affairs, especially the various wars with France. This copy was owned by William Cleveland Stevens, whose ancestors, the Clevelands are among the correspondents. A scarce title.
