Beautifully illustrated, this edition has an extended number of plates with a total of 912 coin impressions on 76 copperplates; 2 engraved frontispieces, one engraved bust portrait, and a remarkable suite of 13 exquisite equestrian emperor portraits, engraved by C. de Passe after Johannes Stradanus (Jan van der Straeten, 1523-1605). The work went through several editions, was first printed in Antwerp in 1615 and 1627 (Beller); later in Berlin in 1705 (Rüdiger). In 1738 publisher Martin Schagen got the publishing rights and issued the present copy. He could now reset the entire work and print it in elegant quarto format, add the Johannes Stradanus suite of portraits, extra suite of coin illustrations, and allow the plates the freedom to remain bound separately from the text. The edition was printed on handsome laid paper with ample margins, and the strikes of the plates are remarkably more beautiful than these of their predecessors. Ex-library with a library stamp on the title-page and an embossed library stamp on approximately six leaves (no plates), and a perforated stamp on a few leafs, the text-block has browning, in some cases quite significant. boards slightly warped with a bit of wear to the spine ends, but this is still a very good copy of this important catalogue of this collection of ancient coins. Charles III de Croy [1560-1612] Seigneur de Croy, who played an important role on both sides of the Dutch Revolt, serving both the Protestant insurgents in 1583 and later in 1585, his allegiance returned to his Catholic faith and the Spanish Crown. He was an avid collector of both art and coins. He is perhaps most famous for his Albums, a collection of detailed, illustrated maps of all his lands and holdings. 'These cartualries were in reality real atlases and contained numerous colored maps in teh manner of a cadastre. These collections also contained some birds'-eye views of the castles and villages. The cadastral plans were reproduced on parchment, and in addition to the plans, the view of each locality was painted in gouache. In 1610 he appointed the Antwerp Jacob de Bie as keeper of his extensive collection of ancient coins. De Bie began work on an edition of the collection, which finally appeared after the Duke's death in 1615 and reprinted in the above edition in 1627.…

Nice and interesting collection of two books by Lorentz Beger with great numismatic interest. The first work is famous because it mentions for the first time the famous Roman sarcophagus of the Pamphili collection. The second work is very rare. Beger rewrites here a study by Jacob de Bie (1581-1640) , numismatic collector and print-maker of the Southern Netherlands , first published in 1615, then 1627, with commentary by Albert Rubens (son of the painter). The study describes the collection of the golden roman coins of Charles de Croij (1560 - 1612) He was a famous collector ; also known for his collection of the ''Albums de Croy'' which offer a rich iconography of his estates in the Netherlands. Lorentz Beger (1653-1705) was librarian to the Elector of Brandenburg Friedrich III and also responsible for his art collections. The second work is dedicated by Beger to Elector Friedrich III 2 years before he became Friedrich Ist, king of Prussia.…
