Interior is clean and bright throughout, with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. External shelfwear. Issued without a dust jacket. -- This book presents an examination of sex integration in sport and physical culture, offering a critical intervention into ongoing debates about gender, power, and equality in athletic contexts. It is structured into four thematic parts, each addressing a distinct domain of sport where sex integration plays out in unique ways. Part I, Theorizing Sex Integration in Sport and Physical Culture, lays the conceptual groundwork. Pamela R. Sailors probes philosophical justifications for and against mixed-sex competition, while Lindsay Parks Pieper explores the persistence of sex segregation through medico-scientific categorization, showing how policies reinforce traditional gender binaries even amid shifting social norms. Part II, Integration in PE and Youth Sport, shifts the lens to educational settings. Contributions investigate how children and adolescents experience and interpret gender through physical education. Studies from Spain and Sweden assess teachers' perceptions of homophobia and heterosexism, and how co-educational settings mediate children's understanding of gender roles. The chapters on korfball and floorball serve as case studies illustrating how gender-neutral sports may challenge or entrench existing hierarchies depending on context. Part III, Integrated Non-Contact Sports, examines sports that do not involve direct physical confrontation. Case studies include mixed-doubles tennis, cheerleading, equestrian disciplines, and recreational surfing. These chapters delve into the social dynamics of mixed-sex teams, focusing on etiquette, identity construction, and symbolic inclusion. For example, equestrian sport emerges as a rare field where men and women compete equally, prompting reflections on gender-neutral athletic excellence. A chapter on touch rugby among forced migrants in Rome extends this conversation into sport-for-development, showing how sex-integrated formats can foster both symbolic unity and practical inclusion. Part IV, Integrated Contact Sports, turns to arguably the most contentious terrain: sports characterized by high physicality and entrenched masculine norms. Essays explore the lived experiences of women in male-dominated spaces such as football, roller derby, and ice hockey. Topics range from basketball practice squads comprising men supporting women's teams, to the use of karate partnerships as micro-sites for resisting gender inequality. These chapters highlight both the transformative potential and persistent resistance encountered in contact sports settings. Across all sections, the volume engages with intersecting axes of identity, including race, sexuality, and class. Several contributions note that sex integration does not automatically dismantle hierarchies; in fact, it may reproduce existing inequalities unless accompanied by deeper institutional change. Methodologically, the book draws on qualitative approaches such as interviews, discourse analysis, and ethnography, enabling fine-grained insights into how integration is negotiated on the ground. Empirical contexts range from school programs and grassroots initiatives to Olympic-level competition, showcasing the geographic and institutional diversity of sex-integrated sport. For academics and students in sociology of sport, gender studies, physical education, and sport policy, the volume provides a valuable empirical and theoretical resource. It supports nuanced analysis of how gender operates in everyday athletic life and invites reconsideration of entrenched assumptions about embodiment, fairness, and equality. The collection can be used to frame research questions, contextualize policy debates, and inform pedagogical practices concerned with inclusivity in sport.

Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 288 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Scholars working in the academic field of sport studies have long debated the relationship between sport and gender. Modern sport forms, along with many related activities, have been shown to have historically supported ideals of male superiority, by largely excluding women and/or celebrating only men's athletic achievements. While the growth of women's sport throughout the 20th and 21st centuries has extinguished the notion of female frailty, revealing that women can embody athletic qualities previously thought exclusive to men, the continuation of sex segregation in many settings has left something of a discursive 'back door' through which ideals of male athletic superiority can escape unscathed, retaining their influence over wider cultural belief systems. However, sex-integrated sport potentially offers a radical departure from such beliefs, as it challenges us to reject assumptions of male superiority, entertaining very different visions of sex difference and gender relations to those typically constructed through traditional models of physical culture. This comprehensive collection offers a diverse range of international case studies that reaffirm the contemporary relevance of sex integration debates, and also articulate the possibility of sport acting as a legitimate space for political struggle, resistance and change. This book was originally published as a special issue of Sport in Society.
