Hardcover. Condición: fair to vg. First edition. Signed preface by Rabbi Chajes on single folio plate. Elephant folio. Unpaginated string-bound folio booklet, 8pp. laid in, 16 matted, loose color plates (23 x 18"). Original three quarter black cloth over decorative paper-covered boards with multiple silver Stars of David motif, and an enlarged facsimile of the artist's bold signature in silver on a pasted down black cloth label with silver ruling. The text booklet is illustrated with a sepia-toned, tipped-on portrait of Isidor Kaufmann by Hans Temple on cover and contains a list of plates. An admirer of Kaufmann's works, Vienna's Chief Rabbi Dr. Chajes wrote a warm and poetic foreword to this 1925 portfolio of the artist's phototypes in which he praised the artist for his mastery and insight. This magnificent work is profusely illustrated with 16 matted color plates and 1 tipped-on sepia-toned print as issued. Through his powerful and colorful work presented here in high quality reproductions, Kaufmann brings to life the people and scenes in the Viennese ghetto, true to his reputation as one of the great portraitists of his day. Some age wear on portfolio with split cloth at front joint of head and tail of spine, missing cloth at front corners and lose along edges. Small paper remnant glued to the middle of front cover near spine. Decorative paper sunned at bottom, some black paint brushes, rubbed and minor damp-staining and soiling. Some creasing at bottom of single sheet, minor soiling at bottom of booklet front cover with slight creasing of white margin of tipped-on print at right edge. Some age-toning of mats along edges not affecting images. Text in German. Portfolio in overall fair to good-, images in very good condition. Signed.…

Portfolio. Condición: Good+. 4to 11" - 13" tall; 28 pages; 1926 The National Museum âBezalel, â Jerusalem. Large folio portfolio of 24 designs by Abel Pann, with a foreword by Dr. H. P. Chajes. English-language edition. Complete with all 24 lithographic plates, each measuring approximately 12" x 9", together with the large folding preliminary title/index leaf. Plates printed in varying monochromatic tones of black, gray, sepia and reddish brown. Pann's haunting series depicts the persecution, displacement and suffering of Eastern European Jews during the pogroms of the First World War era, with subjects including The Cossacks Are Coming, The Flight, The Hostages, Under the Lash, The Cattle-Truck, Lost Children, En Route to Siberia, In the Streets of Warsaw and The Morning After the Pogrom. The designs originated in a larger series Pann began in 1916 in response to reports of anti-Jewish violence in Eastern Europe; 24 were selected for this 1926 Bezalel publication. Scattered foxing and staining to the plate leaves, heaviest to the first several plates and principally affecting the margins, though with some intrusion into the image areas; later plates generally cleaner. Lacking the original portfolio/binder. An uncommon and powerful early Bezalel publication, complete with all 24 plates. G+. …
