Hardcover, cloth. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. Illustrated Edition. CHAGALL, Marc [Lassaigne, Jacques, introduction]. The Ceiling of the Paris Opera. New York: Frederick A. Praeger, 1966. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Lithographs. Large quarto. Original cloth in original dust jacket. Fully i…llustrated, including numerous color plates and the frontispiece lithograph by Marc Chagall. Contents, Near Fine. The present copy retains all original lithographs, including the frontispiece and the mounted folding "Final Study" affixed inside the rear cover, often lacking in lesser copies. Original dust jacket with minor edge wear only. Chagall's ceiling for the Palais Garnier remains one of the most debated and celebrated artistic interventions in a historic European monument. Commissioned in 1963 by French Minister of Culture André Malraux for the nineteenth-century opera house designed by Charles Garnier, Chagall replaced the original ceiling with a vast modernist composition honoring the great composers of opera and ballet, including Mozart, Wagner, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, and Ravel. Rather than concealing Garnier's architecture, the luminous floating figures and dreamlike color fields were conceived to dialogue with the opulent Second Empire interior, creating a striking union between nineteenth-century architectural grandeur and twentieth-century modern art. Issued to document Chagall's commission for the ceiling of the Paris Opera House (Palais Garnier), with Chagall's remarks delivered at the unveiling, tracing the development of the project from preparatory studies to the completed ceiling. The unveiling generated considerable controversy in Paris at the time, yet the ceiling has since become one of the defining visual features of the Paris Opera House and among Chagall's most recognized monumental works. Additional pictures are gladly provided on request. Book will be carefully wrapped and boxed securely for safe handling during transit, with international shipping available. [Attributes: First Edition; First Printing; Hard Cover; Illustrated; Lithographs; Dust Jacket.]. Chagall, Marc (ilustrador).

Hardcover. Condición: vg to near fine. First edition. Quarto. xxxviii, 151pp. [1]. Illustrated purple and red dust jacket. Beige cloth boards with illustration in black on the front cover, black lettering on the spine. Illustrated endpapers. Original torn publisher's belly band laid in at the interior front cover. This unique co…py contains two inscriptions to former president of Israel Zalman Shazar (1889-1974), in pen on the title page. One at the top is a 75th birthday gift inscription in Hebrew from a unidentified friend of Shazar, and below it is another warm inscription from artist Marc Chagall in Yiddish, dated 1964. Chagall writes: "In honor of the president and my good friend Z. Shazar, with love, Marc Chagall, Jerusalem 1964". It can be assumed that Shazar's friend gave him the book as a gift and Marc Chagall, who was present at the time, also inscribed it to him. This monograph showcases Marc Chagall's graphic work from the years 1922-1957, and includes a total of 148 images reproducing the artist's work. Binding with very minor age toning along the bottom edge of the front cover. A few light stains to the top edge of the book block. Interior clean throughout, with book block tight overall.
