Responding to (and helping define) his patrons' desire for international style and sophistication, Netscher's exquisite portraits and subject pieces are unmistakably Dutch, yet are imbued with an elegance more in keeping with progressive pan-European tastes.This is the first full-length study to examine the work of this important Dutch artist and to specifically refute the commonly held notion of the "decline" of Dutch art at the end of the seventeenth century. The book contains much new and previously unpublished information. The text is complemented by an appendix of documents relevant to the artist (most previously unpublished), and concludes with an exhaustive catalogue raisonné of the paintings. The latter contains detailed information on 220 accepted paintings by the artist, 44 problematic attributions (including some compositions known only through copies and works that involve a significant amount of studio assistance); 470 rejected works; and 388 paintings mentioned in the literature prior to 1800 but presently untraced.

Januar 1684 in Den Haag) war ein Porträt- und Genremaler.Netscher war der Sohn des Bildhauers Johann Netscher. Er wuchs in Arnheim auf und ging bei Hendrick Coster in die Lehre. Dort wurde… er durch den Arnheimer Lizenzmeister Willem Everwijn um 1654 in die Werkstatt von Gerard Terborch nach Deventer vermittelt. 1658 oder spätestens Anfang 1659 verzog Netscher nach Den Haag. Dort arbeitete er für ansässige Kunsthändler, die er zunächst hauptsächlich mit Kopien von Bildern seines Lehrers, aber auch anderer geschätzter Maler belieferte ? ein damals vollkommen geläufiges Verfahren.Bereits im Sommer 1659 gab er diese schlecht bezahlte Arbeit auf um nach Italien zu reisen und seine künstlerische Ausbildung zu vervollständigen. Seine Schiffsreise führte ihn zunächst nach Bordeaux, wo er Station machte. Sein Leben erfuhr hier jedoch eine entscheidende Wendung, denn er heiratete dort bereits am 25. November 1659 die Hugenottin Margaretha Godijn, die Tochter eines aus Lüttich stammenden Werkzeugmachers.1662 begab sich Netscher mit seiner jungen Familie ? mittlerweile war der Sohn Theodor geboren ? zurück nach Den Haag: Am 25. Oktober 1662 ist Netschers Eintritt in die Haager Malergilde Pictura urkundlich belegt. In Den Haag malte er zunächst Genreszenen, die deutlich den Einfluss seines Lehrers Terborch verraten, denn besondere Sorgfalt widmete er der differenzierten Behandlung der Stoffe, wie Orientteppiche, Seide und Brokat in ihrer Wirkung durch Licht und Schatten. Eines seiner bekanntesten Werke ist Die Spitzenklöpplerin, das 1662 entstand (London, Wallace Collection). Bald darauf wendet er sich vor allem der Porträtmalerei zu, wo er hohe Anerkennung fand. Couche & J. Bouilliard, [n.d., 1786-1808]. This series of plates depict the collection of the Royal Palace in Paris. Each plate is set in a decorative border and accompanied by a descriptive text (by l'Abbe de Fontenal), describing the artist and painting. The author Jacques Couche (1759-1836), was a French engraver, student of Levasseur.Biography engraver: Ignaz Sebastian Klauber (1753-1817) originated from Augsburg. He later worked in St. Petersburg.Biography artist: Caspar Netscher (1639-1684) was a Dutch portrait and genre painter. He was born in Heidelberg or Prague, but fled with his mother and sister to Arnhem during the civil war. He became a pupil of Ter Borch for a few years before embarking on a Grand Tour. He died early, in 1684, but his legacy was thenceforth carried by his two sons, Constantyn and Theodorus. Condition: very good, given age. Light foxing, creasing and soiling. . Naar een schilderij uit de collectie van het Rijksmuseum, SK-A-292.Constantijn Huygens heeft een enorme veelzijdigheid aan de dag gelegd. Niet alleen was hij de trouwe dienaar van drie prinsen, ook was hij een groot dichter, begaafd schilder, componist, musicus en een toegewijd vader. Hij kende zijn talen en zag veel van Europa.Huygens verkeerde in de hoogste bestuurlijke kringen, maar maakte tegelijkertijd ook deel uit van de culturele elite. Hij had een groot aandeel in het ontwerp van zijn eigen huis, was de 'ontdekker' van Rembrandt en onderhield contacten met grote denkers als Spinoza en Descartes. Constantijn Huygens had kortom veel weg van het toenmalige humanistische ideaalbeeld van de homo universalis. Die internationale oriëntatie vinden we ook terug in zijn poëzie, die anders was dan de gedichten die tot dan in Nederland werden geschreven, zoals de gedichten van Cats. Zijn gedichten waren vol dubbelzinnigheden, onverwachte gedachtensprongen en onalledaagse metaforen.Geboren te Den Haag in op 4 september 1596Overleden te Den Haag op 28 maart 1687.
