All 54 are printed on paper 12 x 9 cm. Each is captioned and numbered in roman numerals, with the first as III and the last as XCVII. Carter published his 'Views of Ancient Buildings in England' between 1786 and 1793, and the six volumes contained a total of 120 views. Those LACKING from this collection, in arabic numerals, are…1, 2, 6-10, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, 26, 36-38, 43, 48, 53, 57-59, 63-66, 69-71, 73, 75, 76, 78, 81-84, 90-94, 96, and 97-120. The 53 present are in fair condition, on lightly-foxed paper, with small pinholes in the margins of a few of the engravings (not affecting image or text). Simply-executed and charming, the images range from '[III] View of the chapel of St. John Baptist, and part of the tomb of Sr. Thomas Vaughan Kt. treasurer to Edward IV. in the east end of the Abbey Westminster.' to '[XCVII] North view of the Gate of Bermodsey [sic] Monastry, [sic] in the Borough, Southwark.' The images are not confined to London.

Vetusta Monumenta is the title of a published series of illustrated antiquarian papers on ancient buildings, sites, and artefacts, mostly those of Britain, published at irregular intervals between 1718 and 1906. Hand made wove paper 'J. Whatman, Turkey Mill, 1827' watermark. Light grey folding card covers with title in black to…the front cover. Elephant folio 22½'' x 15¼''. Containing 3 single sheet plates, 1 double sheet plate (Palace of Westminster). 8 pages of text (Palace of Westminster), 4 pages of text (Swords of State Belonging to the Earldom of Chester) and 2 pages of text (The Obelisk at Forres, Morayshire, North Britain. Called Sueno's Stone). William Capon, an architect and scene painter known for his depictions of historic buildings, lived in Westminster and surveyed the Old Palace of Westminster between 1793 and 1823. This plan was purchased from him by the Society of Antiquaries in 1826 which had it engraved and published in 1828. Old water stains to the edges of the single plates, and to the centre and the edges of the double plate, and to the centre of the card covers, small tears to the edges of the plates. Member of the P.B.F.A. LONDON (Londinium).

Marginal defects, center fold tears and some light water stains,The Society's Cathedral Series, published from 1795 to 1813, was the first attempt to provide accurate, detailed and measured illustrations of religious houses in England. John…Carter, who was responsible for most, proved outstanding as a draughtsman and vigorously campaigned for the preservation of the buildings. Durham was chosen as 'the most magnificent' construction in the Norman style, and Carter's cross-section was the largest of his drawings to be engraved.Four perspective renderings from English cathedrals. These were commissioned by the Society of Antiquaries of London. They are engraved by James Basire from drawings by John Carter and relate to St Albans, Durham, Exeter, and Gloucester Cathedrals. James Basire (1730-1802) was a member of The Society of Antiquaries of London and specialised in architectural engraving. Works by Basire hang in museums and galleries throughout the world, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the National Portrait Gallery, London In 1772, William Blake was apprenticed to Basire for the term of seven years. For a time Blake considered Basire a rival and a threat to his own remarkable career.
