Please note there are many discriminatory remarks made about non-white people and many illustrations of fully naked women throughout both volumes. This was a controversial work in its time because it focuses on the sexual practices and customs of cultures from around the world. This work also includes descriptions of non-sexual customs and practices and religion. Authored anonymously by "a French Army-Surgeon." Also includes references to works by Richard F. Burton, Drs. Ploss and Schlegel, Archdn. Gray (of Hong-Kong), Krafft-Ebing, Edward B. Tylor, and others. The Editor's Foreword adamantly defends this two-volume work. According to editor Charles Carrington, this book makes contributions to the field of anthropology by researching "taboo" sexual aspects of anthropology and provides sexual education to an uninformed general public. His perspective on the matter is summarized by his lament that "ignorance is not innocence." He refers to the common trend at the time of women not being knowledgeable of their own anatomy even when expecting a child and implicitly promotes that they learn about the subject. Carrington also believes that if sexual education were more widely expected, there would be decreased occurrences of sexually transmitted diseases. Chapters are organized by geographical region.
