Original dark blue cloth rubbed and light mottling; spine slightly cocked with shallow surface cloth loss of .5cm at both frayed ends; board corners bumped and worn; gilt stamping upon front board and spine remains quite bright. Edges toned; foxing and s…oiling to preliminary and terminal leaves with mostly mild foxing on interior text pages; signatures of two individuals upon front pastedown of which one is in fairly modern green ink accompanied with yet another individual's old ink signature on the opposing front free endpaper; scattered underlining and margin marks in both pencil and ink amongst text. Pages 3-5 feature an Introductory Note by W.L. Gage. i.e. the Reverend William Leonard Gage (1832-1889). Biography of Hamburg, Germany book publisher Friedrich Christoph Perthes (1772-1843) and his wife Karoline Claudius Perthes (1774-1821). Authorship is not specified upon the book's title leaf but is attributed to (within the Introduction and by OCLC) to the Perthes' son Professor Clemens Theodor Perthes (1809-1867). Gage's Introduction implies that this biography is heavily abridged from a two-volume work published in England (undoubtedly "Memoirs of Frederick Perthes; or, Literary, Religious, and Political Life in Germany, from 1789 to 1843" and first published in Edinburgh by T. Constable in 1856 which, in turn, was translated and derived from the original German edition by Clemens Theodor Perthes) and that "a genial and gifted friend" has reviewed the whole work and "culled out those portions which especially illustrate the family life of Frederick and Caroline Perthes" although Gage continues "The central figure of the book . . . is Caroline . . . [and] not the . . . husband." Neither the editor nor translator is named but, curiously, Reverend Gage translated several books from German during his preaching career. Only a good copy but an interesting and apparently quite uncommon American Tract Society imprint as OCLC cites only nine copies among member libraries.
