Un leggerissimo ed ininfluente piccolo alone all'angolo alto esterno delle ultime 10 pagine e nel complesso esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Seconda edizione di questo studio del noto studioso e poeta, Gian Francesco Nazareno Caroli (Modena 18011873), poi Giovanni Maria una volta entrato nel seminario di Ferrara. L'autore, insieme a Agostino Peruzzi (1764-1850), Antonio Monticelli (1777-1862) e Gaetano Alimonda (1818-1891) fu tra i massimi esponenti del movimento anti-satanista italiano dell'ottocento. Autore dalla grande erudizione, studiò l'ebraico ed il caldaico sotto Fabiani. Si laureò in filosofia e teologia nel maggio 1846 presso il collegio di S. Bonaventura a Bologna. Fu commissario generale dei minori conventuali. Fu amico di Rosmini con il quale intrattenne una fitta corrispondenza. Fu invece, su indicazione dello stesso Rosmini, in forte polemica con Gioberti sul quale scrisse due opere di critica sotto falso nome. Intorno alla metà dell'ottocento iniziò ad interessarsi al magnetismo animale ed alle dottrine ad esso collegate pubblicando i suoi studi, per la prima volta, nel 1858 nell'opera "Del Magnestismo animale ossia Mesmerismo". In quest'opera l'autore, riflettendo sulla grande diffusione che avevano avuto IMG_5750_clipped_rev_1nella prima metà dell'ottocento le teorie legate al magnetismo animale, al mesmerismo ed ai fenomeni di parapsicologia inizia a valutare queste idee come estremamente pericolose per la fede cattolica, in quanto queste teorie finivano per avanzare l'ipotesi della radice fisica dei fatti di coscienza. Caroli, però, a differenza di tutto il mondo ecclesiastico analizza in quest'opera i fenomeni parapsicologici arriva a postulare l'assoluta credibilità di queste manifestazioni spiritiche e magnetiche viste come verità storica. La maggior parte dell'opera consiste, infatti, nella descrizione attentamente documentata dei fenomeni fisio-psicologici del mesmerismo. Caroli descrive con palese simpatia la sfera psicologica e parapsicologica arrivando a prestare grande attenzione ai presupposti fisiologici della psicologia. L'autore si scaglia invece contro le spiegazioni materialistiche dei fenomeni parapsicologici concludendo infine che l'unica vera e plausibile spiegazione di tali fenomeni siano interventi demoniaci.
