Neatly pasted to the blank recto of the frontispiece is the cut signature of John Rutter Chorley, and above it the inscription (in another hand): "Thomas Carlyle as a small Memorial of the great friendship entertained for him by" Chorley, poet and scholar, numbered Carlyle among his small band of intimate friends.
