An excellent, crisp copy; very minor toning and reinforcements to a few blank areas of margin, otherwise very good. Commemorative broadside dedicated by the celebrated publisher-engraver Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi (1627-1691) to Cardinal Le…andro Colloredo (1639-1709), as a "skillfully engraved perpetual monument" to the clergyman. As the dedication is signed by Rossi as well as bearing his imprint, the print can be dated to between 1686 (when Colloredo became a Cardinal) and 1691 (Rossi's death). The scene shows the Virgin Mary with the Infant Christ, surrounded by angels as well as two full-length saints: Charles Borromeo (canonized 1610) and Ignatius of Loyola (canonized 1622). Ignatius, wearing a chasuble, points to the pages of his own Rules of the Society of Jesus, while Borromeo, the great advocate of the poor, supplicates the Virgin with open palms alongside a tablet engraved with his personal motto, 'humilitas'. The scene is a somewhat free interpretation of a painting in the Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella (Rome) by Carlo Maratta, the leading painter of late Baroque Rome as explained in the caption below, which praises the talented paintbrush of Maratta. In particular, the engraver Nicolas Dorigny (1658-1746) certainly took liberties with the head and face of Loyola, which is here somewhat more interesting than in Maratta's original. OCLC shows 2 copies worldwide: at the Newberry ("trimmed within the platemark") and at the Biblioteca Casanatense (digitized, in very poor condition, lacking the entire lower panel).

The original painting by Carlo Maratta, dating 1663, stands on the main altar of the Roman church of St. Isidore. The…marvellous frame decorated with roses was sculpted by Bernini. The print was probably sketched (and published?) in the period Étienne Picart was in Rome, 1655-1665.Signed on bottom right: 'Steph. Picart R.us fecit et ex. Cum Pri. Regis'. Incomplete impression, lettering at the bottom removed. Still, beautiful impression, masterly engraved.On bottom of the right corner, some pencil scribblings not affecting the plate. Engraving on paper, trimmed within plate mark, total: 421 x 323 mm; some foxing on the most external margins; watermark with monogram of Christ; traces of previous mountings on verso. Light horizontal fold in the middle.

La sua famiglia proveniva dalla Dalmazia ma per sfuggire alla dominazione turca si rifugiò in Italia vicino ad Ancona. Giovanissimo e fino ai venticinque anni frequentò la bottega di Andrea Sacchi, uno dei maggiori artisti…della Roma del tempo, che lo introdusse alla pittura di rigorosa accademia sulle orme auliche di Raffaello, tralasciando il gusto pittorico dell'epoca dominato invece dal Barocco. Dopo alcuni successi romani, nel 1647 si trasferì per due anni ad Ancona e qui studiò e si avvicinò ai lavori di Tiziano e Guercino presenti in città. Maratta viaggiò tra le due città ricevendo importanti commissioni soprattutto dopo la salita al soglio pontificio di Alessandro VII, divenendo principe degli accademici di San Luca. Inoltre è importante ricordare che riuscì a conciliare le tendenze opposte della pittura romana tra Seicento e Settecento caratterizzata dal contrasto tra classicismo e baracco, e lo fece inglobando sul classicismo il Barocco privo però dei più elaborati eccessi. In questa stampa vediamo rappresentato il Bambino Gesù dormiente. Egli giace in un interno al suolo, sopra un lembo di tessuto riccamente panneggiato che copre l'inguine. Il bambino a figura interna, la testa su un grosso cuscino, è rivolto leggermente a sinistra, ha il volto paffuto e tenero, gli occhi chiusi e dorme serenamente. Vicino a lui sulla sinistra, sono abbandonate al suolo una corona di spine, un martello e dei chiodi a memoria di quello che sarà il suo destino. Sulla destra in alto due teste di cherubini fra le nubi vegliano il sonno profondo. Al di la di una colonna, sullo sfondo si apre un placido paesaggio contraddistinto da catene montuose e un'esile pianta dalle copiose fronde. Impressione eccellente, dai neri delicati. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Minimi margini oltre la battuta del rame. Stato unico. Secondo Bellini osservando le ombreggiature si notano affinità con altre incisioni del Maratta quali: La Visitazione, il Martirio di S. Andrea e Cristo adorato dagli Angeli.
