A pagina 55 "Spiegazione della gemma" e da pag. 79 la Dissertazione II su "Curiose ricerche intorno alle vesti ed alle armi degli eroi della Grecia". Carlo Antonioli nacque a Correggio (Modena) nel 1728. Compì gli studi filosofici ed umanistici a Firenze ed entrò tra i chierici regolari delle Scuole Pie. Fu chiamato nel 1752 a occupare all' università di Pisa la cattedra di eloquenza, unendo a questo incarico, dal 1753, l'insegnamento della logica e metafisica. Nel 1765, abbandonato l'insegnamento filosofico, ottenne la cattedra di letteratura greca, che tenne sino alla morte, avvenuta nel 1800. Ai suoi interessi archeologici devono essere ascritte le opere di argomento antiquario e di interesse filosofico, quasi tutte dettate da intenzioni polemiche. Prima, fra esse, fu l'Antica gemma etrusca spiegata e illustrata, nella quale l'Autore, in contrasto con altri studiosi e in particolare col Winckelmann, dava una nuova interpretazione di un famoso cammeo di proprietà del barone di Stosch.
