To carry out these objectives the Committee: Maintains a network of people interested in critically examining claims of the paranormal; Prepares bibliographies of published materials that carefully examine such claims; Encourages and commissions research by objective and impartial inquiry in areas where it is needed; Convenes conferences and meetings; Publishes articles, monographs, and books that examine claims of the paranormal; Does not reject claims on a priori grounds, antecedent to inquiry, but rather examines them objectively and carefully. Soft cover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine condition color illustrated softcover wraps. Includes Preliminary Page entitled: Carl Sagan's Universe; List of Contributors; Preface by Yervant Terzian and Elizabeth M. Bilson dated January 1997; Epilogue; Carl Sagan at 60 by Frank H.T. Rhodes, President Emeritus, Cornell Universit…y; and Index. Illustrated with color photographs, black-and-white photographs, graphs, tables and diagrams. The copyright page states: "First Published 1997" with no later printings mentioned, indicating this is a first edition. "Carl Sagan's many contributions to science and society have been profound and far-reaching, influencing millions of people around the world. He carried out significant research in planetary science, was closely associated with the US space program, created the highly-acclaimed television series, "Cosmos," and was the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of many best-selling popular science books. Carl Sagan's Universe is a fascinating and beautifully illustrated collection of articles by a distinguished team of authors, and covers the many fields of science, education, policy making, and related areas in which Sagan worked. The book is divided into four sections, the first two of which provide an absorbing overview of the US space program (as well as a complementary account of the Russian program), and of the history and current status of the search for extraterrestrial life. The final two sections deal with the importance of science education in the successful development of a technological society, and of the shaping of science policy in takling the problems facing us today. Also included is a separate chapter by Sagan himself, discussing the place and role of our planet and mankind in the universe. Written in honor of Carl Sagan's many achievements, this book will fascinate and reward anyone interested in planetary science and exploration, the search for extraterrestrial life, or the role of science in the modern world. Contributors: Bill Aldridge, Walter Anderson, Georgi Arbatov, Joan Campbell, Christopher Chyba, Frank Drake, Ann Dryan, Richard Garwin, James Hansen, Paul Horowitz, Wesley Huntress, Jon Lomberg, David Morrison, Philip Morrison, Bruce Murray, Frank Press, James Randi, Frank Rhodes, Carl Sagan, Roald Sagdeev, Edward Stone, Kip Thorne, Owen Toon, and Richard Turco." - from the rear outer cover. Wraps. Condición: Good. [2], 144, [2] pages. Illustrations. Formulae, References. Cover has wear, soiling, and a front scuff. This issue has a number of articles on the Mariner Mars 1971 Experiments. The Mariner Mars 1971 scientific experiments and Principal Investigators for each experiment are listed. The general objectives of… the Mariner Mars 1971 science effort are (1) to provide broad topographic and thermal coverage, (2) to study seasonal variations in the atmosphere and on the surface, and (3) to obtain other long-term dynamic observations. Icarus is a scientific journal dedicated to the field of planetary science. Its longtime owner and publisher was Academic Press, which was then purchased by Elsevier. It is published under the auspices of the American Astronomical Society's Division for Planetary Sciences (DPS). The journal contains articles discussing the results of new research on astronomy, geology, meteorology, physics, chemistry, biology, and other scientific aspects of the Solar System or extrasolar systems. The journal was founded in 1962, and became affiliated with the DPS in 1974. Carl Sagan served as editor of the journal from 1968 to 1979. The journal is named for the mythical Icarus. Carl Edward Sagan (November 9, 1934 - December 20, 1996) was an American astronomer, cosmologist, astrophysicist, astrobiologist, author, science popularizer, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences. He is best known for his work as a science popularizer and communicator. His best known scientific contribution is research on extraterrestrial life, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by radiation. Sagan assembled the first physical messages sent into space: the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record, universal messages that could potentially be understood by any extraterrestrial intelligence that might find them. Sagan argued the now accepted hypothesis that the high surface temperatures of Venus can be attributed to and calculated using the greenhouse effect. Sagan published more than 600 scientific papers and articles and was author, co-author or editor of more than 20 books. He wrote many popular science books, such as The Dragons of Eden, Broca's Brain and Pale Blue Dot, and narrated and co-wrote the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. The most widely watched series in the history of American public television, Cosmos has been seen by at least 500 million people across 60 different countries. The book Cosmos was published to accompany the series. He also wrote the science fiction novel Contact, the basis for a 1997 film of the same name. His papers, containing 595,000 items, are archived at The Library of Congress. Sagan advocated scientific skeptical inquiry and the scientific method, pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He spent most of his career as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University, where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. Sagan and his works received numerous awards and honors, including the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal, the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for his book The Dragons of Eden, and, regarding Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, two Emmy Awards, the Peabody Award and the Hugo Award. Comet Kohoutek, formally designated C/1973 E1, 1973 XII, and 1973f, was first sighted on 7 March 1973 by Czech astronomer Lubo? Kohoutek. It attained… perihelion on 28 December that same year. This comet was observed by the crews of Skylab 4 and Soyuz 13, thus becoming the first comet to be observed by a manned spacecraft, since Apollo 13's planned observations of the prominent naked-eye Comet Bennett were aborted by the moon-bound craft's oxygen-tank explosion. Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Very Good, not far from Near Fine; see scans and description. Chicago: Educational Foundation for Nuclear Science, 1973. The November, 1973 issue of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. "Science and Public Affairs" time period. The famous and historic Doomsday Clock - shown on eac…h cover since 1947, two years after the publication's inception - is not at this time period on the cover, but shows as twelve minutes to midnight on the contents page. Quarto, illustrated staple-bound wraps, 56 pp. Very Good, plus some; no salient flaws. Essentially flawless but for modest spots of external touch-wear and a front-cover subscriber mailing label to a Hampshire College professor. Contents are immaculate. See all scans. Established in 1945 by biophysicist Eugene Rabinowitch and physicist Hyman Goldsmith in response to a correctly-perceived demand for nuclear information at the time by the general public, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is without doubt the most historically significant non-technical publication on the subject of "'global security and public policy issues related to the dangers posed by nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, climate change, and emerging technologies and diseases". Hence, over the years, BAS has become a geopolitical instrument, rather than a nuclear watchdog alone. Some feature topics and contributors in this vintage 1973 issue: Carl Sagan, Space Exploration as a Human Enterprise; Harold C. Urey, The Moon and its Origin; James R. Arnold, The Chemist's Moon; John A. O'Keefe, After Apollo: Fission Origin of the Moon; Russell E. Train, Energy and Environmental Problems; Andrew M. Greeley, America First Revisited. More. See scan of contents page. Very, very scarce original monthly issue. Ships in a new, sturdy, protective box - not a bag. LPR52.
