Publisher's full white cloth, black lettering on spine, "WAR" blind-stamped on cover, black endpapers. Illustrated with nearly 150 full or double-page B&W heliogravure illustrations. A classic work of wartime photography featuring images of WWII captured by legendary Hungarian-born photojournalist Robert Capa (1913-1954), one of the founders of the Magnum photojournalism agency. The photographs are accompanied by texts by Capa. A selection of work by one of the greatest war photographers of the 20th century, including several now iconic images. The work ranges from Trotski in Copenhagen in 1931, Capa's first published picture, to North Vietnam, where he was killed by a land mine in 1954 at the age of 41. Includes a "appreciation of Capa by John Steinbeck, in which he says: "I worked and traveled with Capa a great deal. He may have had closer friends but he had none who loved him more. It was his pleasure to seem casual and careless about his work. He was not. His pictures are not accidents. The emotion in them does not come by chance. He could photograph motion and gaity and heartbreak. He could photograph thought. He made a world and it was Capa's world.".
