The Duke begins the letter by informing Gatacre that he has written to him 'with regard to the native Lines here'. He then describes the problem: 'the 45th. Sikhs were moved into the recently rebuilt Lines vacated by the 21st P[unjab] I[nfantry], when they went to Peshawar, by order of Sir: Genl: Wilkinson & with the subsequent sanction of the C in C:- I have now received an order that they are to vacate these Lines into which the 20th. P[unjab] I[nfantry] are to go on arrival - the Sikhs on going into their present lines were told that they would be there permanently - as authorized by Sir Frederick Roberts - I very much fear that if they are now turned out for the 20th. (a Pathan Regt:) this may cause a considerable ill feeling between two class Regts: - Of course I have nothing to say against the 20th. who are a very fine Regt: & have always done good work, but still the 45th. are one of our crack native Regts: & I think it would be a great pity to allow of their feeling aggrieved.' He believes 'the Sihks will have a fair grievance if they are again charged', having already been 'put to considerable expense'. The second part of the letter concerns 'having kit boxes allowed to the men for use in their tents', the Duke being 'most anxious to make them more comfortable & kit boxes & tables are most urgently wanted'.…
