Un passionnant document retraçant un intéressant parcours ecclésiastique dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle (avec un saisissant récit de l'épidémie de choléra de 1832 à Paris) Fils du fervent légitimiste marseillais André Antoine Esprit Caire et de Joséphine Pinatel, André Antoine Esprit Vincent Caire, né le 5 avril 1797, manifesta dès son plus jeune âge les meilleures dispositions pour la piété et les études sérieuses. Alors qu'il était âgé de six ans, en 1804, son père fut emprisonné mais Napoléon "convaincu qu'il n'avait pas trempé dans la conspiration de Pichegru, lui rendit la liberté et voulut l'attacher à sa cause en lui faisant offrir . les postes les plus éminents". En 1811, suite à l'assassinat de 11 personnes en quelques mois, Mme Caire effrayé obtint de son mari un déplacement de Creisseaux vers Aubagne ; le petit André poursuivit alors ses études au petit séminaire fondé à Marseille par le père Ripert. Après un bref séjour à Aix, il retrouve le père Ripert aux Aygalades. Epuisé par 25 années de lutte, son père meurt en 1816, mais malgré les pressions qu'il eût à subir en tant qu'aîné, André persévère dans sa vocation ecclésiastique ; âgé de 19 ans, et seulement tonsuré, il enseigne déjà au petit séminaire. Ordonné diacre à 22 ans, puis prêtre avant ses 25 ans, il est mandé par Mgr Perigord, archevêque de Paris, et Mgr de Beausset lui accorda l'exeat. L'abbé Caire quitte donc Marseille le 28 août 1821, et est accueilli au séminaire d'Issy par le supérieur M. Duclos. Celui-ci lui annonce alors, comme André Caire l'écrit à sa mère : "vous êtes appelé à remplir de hautes destinées, le coadjuteur me charge de vous envoyer chez Mr Frayssinous, qui doit vous faire une proposition". On déjeune et puis je cours chez Mr. Frayssinous (la tête trottait bien plus encore) cet homme si justement célèbre me propose l'éducation des enfants de Mr. de Clermont-Tonnerre, pair de France. . " On lui prédit même que viendra ensuite l'éducation du Duc de Bordeaux, "dont le marquis de Clermont-Tonnerre sera très probablement le gouverneur". Devant l'insistance du coadjuteur, il rencontre le marquis de Clermont-Tonnerre qui le considère comme engagé. "Je sors étourdi et presque décidé mais la nuit porte conseil. Je considère d'un côté tous les pour : la volonté de l'archevêque, l'avis de son conseil, et surtout de Mr. de Frayssinous, les avantages du poste : logement très agréable, bonne table, excellente société (le grand chancelier, les plus illustres pairs : les Bonald, les Villèle, etc. etc. car tout ce qu'il y a de mieux va là !) Voiture à mon service, campagnes en Normandie, en Picardie, etc. etc. Le marquis et la marquise me plurent (celle-ci par parenthèse est dans ce moment le précepteur de ses enfants ; elle lit Virgile et Tacite comme l'almanach). Mais voici les Contre : d'abord, j'étais perdu pour mon état. considération d'un poids immense ; . Ensuite, un précepteur est toujours le premier domestique et je suis, sans prétention, le fils de mon père. " Le jeune abbé réussit à se sortir avec tact de cette situation délicate, et conserve l'amitié de Mgr. de Quélen et de Mr. Frayssinous. Il est alors admis comme prêtre administrateur à la paroisse des Missions étrangère ; il continue ses visites régulières chez Monsieur Frayssinous, croise le duc de Rivière, M. de Pastoret. L'abbé Caire évoque avec talent un souper servi aux petits Savoyards par la société des bonnes oeuvres "composée de ce qu'il y a de mieux" : "ici un grand vicaire portait du pain ; là le marquis de Montmorency versait à boire, plus loin l'abbé André que vous connaissez bien essuyait, par distraction, le bord d'une assiette contre l'habit du comte de *** qui coudoyait lui-même l'archevêque. Le spectacle était grotesque et touchant à la fois". Le 18 février 1823, M. de Frayssinous le nomme aumônier du Collège Louis le Grand. A l'occasion du passage à Paris de Mgr. de Mazenod, l'abbé Caire lui rend visite sans prétendre s'engager sur un retour à Marseille. Malgré l'irritation de Mgr. de Quélen, l'obstination de Mgr. de Mazenod porta ses fruits et l'abbé Caire retourne à Marseille en 1823, en tant que responsable du petit séminaire. Nommé chanoine honoraire de la cathédrale, il est admis dans la société des prêtres du Sacré-Coeur, mais suite à divers ennui, annonce sa démission du petit séminaire et repart à Paris, où il devient second aumônier à Henri IV. : "l'Abbé de Salinis, premier aumônier, est mon ami ; il a des qualités précieuses, nous vivrons comme deux frères. La situation du collège est charmante : derrière Ste Geneviève, beau jardin, appartement agréable pour les aumôniers, usage de la bibliothèque, voilà ce qui m'a déterminé pour Henri IV". Il dit désormais sa messe pour les religieuses de la Congrégation de Notre-Dame, près de Saint Nicolas du Chardonnet. Dans un courrier à sa mère, lors du carême de 1826, il évoque Lamennais : "M. l'abbé de Lamennais, qui partage quelquefois nos repas, prétend que nous pouvons sans scrupule prendre des forces pour tirer des coups de fusil contre l'impiété". Il évoque ensuite longuement le jubilé royal de 1826 ; il est ensuite nommé aumônier adjoint des pages du roi ; en 1828, et prononce un "panégyrique de Saint Louis" devant l'Académie Française. Il écrit notamment pour rassurer sa mère à propos des scènes révoutionnaires qui avaient eu lieu à l'occasion des élections, et s'inquiète des effets d'une épidémie à Marseille. Pour les vacances de 1828, il doit annuler son projet de descendre en Provence avec le peintre Paulin Guérin, car il est retenu par l'importante affaire du collège de Juilly. Il évoque longuement l'affaire, le tollé suscité par la repris.
