Presentation inscription on blank prelim reads: 'Presented to Mr William charles with the compliments of his friend, The editor. XMas 1888.' In the biographical sketch we are informed that 'Dr Cahill was born at Ashfield, in the parish of Arles, Queen's County, on November 28th, 1796. His father was Daniel, Civil Engineer, and his mother Catherine Brett, youngest daughter of Oliver Brett, of Seville, Spain. He was the youngest of three sons. His first and only mission was at Leighlin Bridge - the parish where his mother's family had lived for 600 years, ever since his ancestor, Sir Philip le Brett, was Governor of Leighlin.' While this may have been his only mission he was well known as a preacher on both sides of the Atlantic and a respected letter writer, making his views known to the Earl of Carlisle, Lord John Russell, Lord Palmerston, Sir Robert Peel, and Napoleon III, among others. He commented on many issues of the day affecting Irish Catholics: The Nunneries Bill, The Social Condition of Ireland; The Irish Tenantry, The Disendowment of Maynooth, Souperism in Kilkenny, Daniel O'Connell, etc. Overall condition of the book is very good.
