See Fores' entry in the Oxford DNB. Almack's Assembly Rooms in King Street was the most fashionable venue for the dandies and belles of Regency London. The present item, deftly hand-coloured in pink, red, light and dark blue, and yellow, is 14 x 10.5 cm, in a grey border extending out to 16.5 x 13 cm. Within the head of the bord…er is 'Illustrations to Almack's, Page 16.', and within the foot is the caption, with Fores' publication details at bottom-right. There are other illustrations by Fores to the novel, and it may be that they were issued as a series. In any case the present item is extremely scarce, no other copy having been located, at the British Library, British Museum Prints and Drawings, or elsewhere. The present copy is in good condition, but there is discoloration and wear to the grey border. 'Almack's / A Novel' had been published anonymously in London in 1826 by 'Saunders and Otley, Public Library, Conduit Street.' It appears to be the only novel that Marianne Spencer Hudson published. The passage referred to in the caption appears on p.21 of that edition: ' "There goes a flower of a youth," said Isaac to his ancient spouse; "he'll make a figure wherever he goes, my life on it, and my blessing go with him." / "Amen," said old Molly, wiping her eyes upon her blue checked apron. / Colonel Montague had indeed been the flower of his family, [.]'. The scene, as depicted by Fores, is of a young gentleman (Colonel Montagu), dressed in the height of fashion with hat in hand, looking at an armorial shield on the wall of a castle or hall, while he is stared at by a bespectackled rake of an old woman (Molly), hands raised, while her short and plump knock-kneed husband gestures to the young man while looking up at his wife with flushed cheeks. The overall effect is deliberately absurd. See image.
