Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Inscribed by the author to the printer/publisher in black ink. 6 1/4" x 9 1/4." 202 pages, complete. Black and white illustrations, complete. Inscription by the author appears in black ink on the front free endpaper: "Dear Mrs. Howe: - Without Keystone's cooperation this book again would have been impossible. I shudder to think what a nerve strain it would have been to have closed with New York publishers. Gratefully, C. M. Goethe." Printed by the Keystone Press in Sacramento, California. Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Slight bit of dampstaining in the lower-right corner of the pages and covers. Text and illustrations are mostly unaffected. Goethe's signature is affected but still intact. A Very Good copy. Charles M. Goethe (1875-1966) was an American eugenicist, businessman, and conservationist. Goethe founded California State University, Sacramento and worked with the National Park Service to help establish interpretive guide programs. Goethe showed a great interest in California history and wrote about the Forty-Niners and the state's famous redwood trees. Goethe is a controversial figure due to his staunch support of eugenics. Eugenics is a "science" based on racial discrimination stating that certain races are naturally superior or inferior to one another. Nazi eugenics eventually led to the horrific events of the Holocaust. Following the Holocaust, American and international interest in eugenics became obsolete, after the world witnessed what eugenics could lead to. The subject of this book is quite apart from eugenics and is instead, as the title indicates, is about the origin of place names in the Gold Belt of California. Names are placed alphabetically. Alphabetical index in the back. Inscribed by Author(s).…

Condición: VERY GOOD. First edition. Autobiography of this Sacramento developer and philanthropist, C. M. Goethe, who was known for both his love of the outdoors (he was one of the founders of the "Save the Redwoods Foundation) and for his interest in eugenics at its most racist and radical - in his 1936 address to the Eugenics Reseach Association, he praised Nazi Germany's "honest yearnings for a better population." This is written in short anecdotes, varying from his parent's lives to their arrival in California to his business ventures, his travels and more. Here are a few sample paragraphs which followed each other: "Tennis Club, Country club" (how he became President of the tennis club after it collapsed with unpaid debt) followed by "Marriage" (December 1903) and then by "Tithe", "Waldensian" and "Arizona." A brief commentary on the Everglades National Park is followed by an eulogy for Dr. Jan Mjoen, a Norwegian eugenicist. Illustrated with photographs throughout. Index. xii, 212 pp. Very good in tan cloth with dark brown stamping on the front cover and spine (previous owner's name on front endpaper).…
