Where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased charges will be quoted. This book focusses on the life and work of F. J. Widgery, 1861-1942, the most active Dartmoor painter of the time. The son of another painter, Widgery studied under Verlat, in Antwerp, and von Herkomer. He spent his life in Exeter and in 1896 was commissioned to illustrate the 3rd edition of Samuel Rowe's A Perambulation of Dartmooor; the 22 landscapes which resulted form the centrepiece of this book which also contains numerous line drawings and sketches. The first section of the book considers the history of landscape artists on Dartmoor and explains why, compared with other parts of Britain, this region was not more popular. The artistic development and life of F. J. Widgery is next presented and the author is to be congratulated on bringing together this information for the first time. As well as being a professional artist Widgery was very active in local issues serving as a City Councillor and Mayor, a JP and Chair of the Town Planning Committee. It is interesting to speculate how Widgery might have developed and how much better known he might have been if he had chosen to establish a career in London rather than in Exeter. Unlike many artists of the time Widgery was not invited to paint any commissions for public buildings and so the paintings in this book are the best evidence of his abilities and interests. Each colour plate is accompanied by the appropriate section of Rowe's book so reproducing the original association of words and art. The final section brings together some contemporary writing about Dartmoor. Whilst Widgery's work is modest, his sketches and watercolours have a certain charm and, in view of the paucity of alternative artwork of the region, it is good to see his work so well presented. However, it is probable that this book will be of most interest to those living near Dartmoor or planning to visit. Ref RR1. F. J. Widgery (ilustrador).
