Thick 8vo. xvi, [2], 216, [1] pp., plus 4 pp. publisher's ads. Photo frontisp., 23 photo plates. Pictorial green linen publisher's cloth, gilt illustration front cover of tiger attacking elephant and hunter, gilt lettering front cover & spine (very slight bumping to couple corners, minor shelfwear, slight foxing to fore-edges),…w/ d.j. dark gray-green paper, illust. repeated on front cover in blue, blue lettering, VG/NF copy, w/ "Association for Promoting Christian Knowledge" prize bookplate on front pastedown to F.H. Giltrap of Mountjoy School in 1914. Second edition of this informative memoir drawn from personal interviews, experiences, and notebooks of big game hunter and late Inspector General of Police, Bombay, Digby Davies, as well as the author's own sporting experiences. At the time, he had been specifically requested to eliminate all personal names and references in the incidents with Davies, whom Gouldsbury would specifically mention in the follow-up "Tiger Slayer by Order" (1915). Gouldsbury writes of numerous encounters with tigers in his own adventures, hunting from elephant back and machans, as well as leopards, and maruading elephants, with additional references to bison, ibex, and others. Davies relates his time serving during the Sepoy Mutiny, work as a sporting inspector, and specifically hunting down tigers, elephants, and others endangering villagers, and livestock. One chapter specifically mentions hunting a 419 lb. tiger stretching over 10 feet, 7 inches from nose to end of tail, and standing 3 1/2 feet which had terrorized villagers killing cattle across Bengal. Very rare in original dustjacket.

Five original stereoview photographs. Three sized 6 x 3 in. mounted on 7 x 3.5 in. beige-coloured tan studio boards, Kilburn w/ imprints below, size of images & verso, 2 only w/ ink MS annotations; two 6 x 3 in. silver gelatin mounted on gray studio boards, printed imprint & caption, scalloped upper fore-edges (minor dustsoiling…, shelfwear), still a VG group, from the library of Prof. Marvin Nathan. Five original and scarce stereoview photographs of the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition & Oriental Fair, which marked the anniversary of the famed exploration over the Louisiana Purchase. These stereoviews illustrate the Sunken Gardens, the U.S. Government Building, the Agricultural and Foreign Palaces, interiors, and the iconic Forestry Building. Benjamin Kilburn (1827-1909). and his brother Edward (b. 1830) initially operated their business together until Edward retired in the 1870's, and by 1872 they had a large photographic stereoview card factory one block from the Littleton trains station. Young salesmen carried the stereoviews on the trains, and by the early 20th-Century the company was the most extensive producer of stereoview photographs, purchasing images from such photographers as William H. Rau, the Kiser Bros., and others. Wasson (fl. 1899-1939) originally founded the International Stereograph Co. in 1899 in Decator, IL, and produced a wide range of images, often in the West, maintaining studios in Idaho, Arizona, and Oregon as well.

With 1 large folding hand-coloured 3 colour map which folds out into 12.5 x 15 in. map as frontisp., w/ two inset profiles at 32 degrees & 42 degrees North from coast-to-coast. First Colton edition of this 19th-century Ninth Census pocket map compactly informing travelers across the post-Civil War United States the total state & territorial populations, as well as offering quick reference to individual important cities. George Woolworth Colton (1827-1901), and brother Charles B. Folio. xi, [1], 207, [1] pp. Engraved frontisp., extra-illustrated engraved title, 5 engraved plates (1 colour woodcut plate for tiles), another engraved plate of Fresnel lenses integral to pagination, with 500 woodcut-engraved text illustrations, decorations. Elaborately decorated & gilt embossed cobalt-blue publisher's cloth,…decorative gilt lettering front & back covers, a.e.g. (rebacked w/ upper portion of original spine laid-back down, corners renewed, resewn, flyleaves expertly silked, wear to lower fore-edges, minor stain to a few leaves in rear of textblock upper fore-edge), still a VG- copy. First edition, possible first state (including the colour plate & extra-illustrated title & frontispiece which are not present in some printings), of this lavishly illustrated catalogue of America's first exposition, inspired and patterned after the 1851 Crystal Palace Great Exhibition in London. Mixed in with the familiar Arts & Crafts material which filled the early expositions, including industrially produced glassware, metalwork, ceramics, and more, the 1853-54 Exposition served as a vital presentation of American invention and technology, including Royal Earl House's innovative printing telegraph with its piano-style keyboard, a Henry Fitz refractor telescope, John Whipple's daguerreotypes shot of the Moon at Harvard College, and even a publicity stunt featuring Elias Otis demonstrating his safety elevator by dramatically cutting the rope holding the cage preventing is descent when they deployed. The 1853-54 Exhibition was also vital to the development of iron construction in America, including the striking octagonally planned domed structure by Castensen and Gildermeister, as well as plans submitted by Paxton, Downing & Vaux, Bogardus, and Hoppin, all illustrated here. After the fair closed in November, 1854, the New York Crystal Palace sporadically held tradefairs until 1858 when the iron and glass building burned to the ground in less than 30 minutes. See: Coleman, The Exhibition in the Palace, a Bibliographical Essay, Bulletin of the New York Public Library (Sept., 1960), pp. 459-477; William Ashworth, Scientist of the Day -- New York Crystal Palace, Linda Hall Library (July 14, 2022).

Tall 8vo. xvi, 292 pp., plus 2 pp. publisher's ads. Photo frontisp., 44 photos and plates, 1 large folding map in rear pocket. Green publisher's cloth, gilt lettering front cover & spine, simulated Zebra skin endpapers (minor bumping to corners, edgewear, slight spotting on the spine), still VG copy. First edition of this excell…ent early account of hunting on the Kenai Peninsula, including descriptions of Alaskan Native Americans, salmon cannery operations, and more. Radclyffe had acquired a permit from the Bureau of Biological Survey with the USDA in order to collect big game specimens for the British Museum, and the account was dedicated to a longtime fellow hunter and friend, Theodore Roosevelt. The author details his experiences with hunting Alaskan Brown Bears, Grizzly Bears, Moose, Dall Sheep, and running afoul of the zealous US Deputy Marshal Sexton, a stickler for the new game regulations instituted on the Kenai in 1903 (not to mention destroying the distilling operation of Alaskan hunter & miner Andrew Berg). He managed to survive a charging bear sow after being abandoned by his guide as well as the Alaskan courtroom, but his companions were not so lucky as the judge ruled that the permit did not extend to the hunting party. Radclyffe returned later to hunt Alaska on the Kenai in August, 1910 employing Andrew Berg as his head guide. See: Catherine Cassidy, Alaska's No. 1 Guide: The History and Journals of Andrew Berg, 1869-1939, pp. 28-29, 38.

Entering the City Engraving with aquatint and contemporary colour, closed tear to title and just into image. A nightime scene showing the Devonport Royal Mail coming in through Temple Bar in the Strand, heading to the Lombard Street Post Office. Temple Bar marks the boundary between the City of London and Westminster; the gate i…s topped by statues of King James I and his wife, Anne of Denmark, with the lion and unicorn supporters from the royal coat of arms. The guard at the back of the carriage is blowing a trumpet to warn passengers and the gatekeepers of their arrival, and has awakened a figure in nightcap and gown who peers from the window to the right. The passage of the coach is observed by a traveller with a carpet bag and a night watchman with a torch hanging from his belt, who would patrol the streets and call out the times. Charles B. Newhouse (1805-77) was an English artist working in London. John Bailey (fl.1811-34) was an engraver working in London; he engraved several views by Pollard. Image: 292 by 414mm (11.5 by 16.25 inches). Sheet: 356 by 450mm (14 by 17.75 inches).

Spine richly gilt decorated and lettered in compartments, decorative gilt turn-ins, marbled end-papers. A unique copy with Henry Alken's original pencil and watercolor drawing (signed in pencil and marked up in black ink) for the pictorial title-page and a hand-colored etched proof of the title, on the back of which is "To go with the original drawing / The Etched outline coloured by Alken Senr." It is interesting to see the progression from the original drawing through the hand-colored etched proof to the finished published pictorial title. ". The Roadsters' Album, a rare and humorous volume of hand-colored aquatints by C.B. Newhouse, an artist who confined himself almost exclusively to scenes of mail and stage coaching and sport driving. The book is an excellent example of Newhouse's work, as his images usually portray the speed associated with the open road, and the calamity or comedy that speed can bring about" (National Sporting Library). First published under the title Incidents in Travelling, London: J. Watson, 1836. A rare book with only two copies appearing at auction over the past fifty years. Reissued as above in 1845 by Messrs. Fores under the title The Roadsters Album with an added hand-colored engraved title-page by Henry Alken. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Messrs. Fores (established 1785-86) ".specialised in publishing and selling the best sporting prints" (Siltzer). Along with Newhouse's Scenes on the Road (1834-35) it would be difficult to find a book which better illustrates the world of coaching as it must have been than The Roadsters' Album. Each aquatint has been expertly hand-colored with a vividness that would be hard to surpass. The Plates: 1. Travelling in a Hunting Country - "I hope you are not much hurt, Sir." 2. An Unwelcome Fare - "All that luggage by the Mail, Ma'am, quite impossible." 3. The Drag is broke and we are on the Bank. 4. Is the Bottom pretty sound? 5. A False Start. 6. Taking an Inside Birth [sic] - "It strikes me we're going to have some rough weather." 7. "No time to lose, Ma'am; here's the other coach close behind." 8. "Hold hard! You have forgot the lady." 9. An Awkward Place in a Frost. 10. I'm afraid we have now got into the Ditch. 11. The Sleepy Gatekeeeper. 12. The Old Grey loosed his Trace again. 13. "Quite full, Sir." 14. One Mile from Gretna, our Governor in sight. 15. An Arrival at Gretna - Overtaken by the Guardian. 16. Going to the Moors. Tooley 346. Abbey, Life 407. Siltzer, p. 192. Snelgrove, British Sporting and Animal Prints, p.126, no. 4. Signed.
