Marryat, a professional writer and British naval officer, toured the United States in 1837 and first published his observations in 1839. The author started in New York, crossed that state and went as far as Sault St. Marie, across Upper Canada, and back to Montreal. Front board of Vol I separated. Marryat toured America and Canada in 1837 and 1838. He was by this time a well respected novelist and he published an account of his travels shortly after returning to England. The Volumes are heavy on data with Naval assets, wages of officers etc catalogued, other chapters include data concerning wildlife, educational level of populations of various US states, penitentiaries, slavery and religion etc. Text block and bindings are in good condition, free flowing pages, square bindings, rated fair due to poor condition noted to spines. The set was frequently pirated in the US. Heavy set, additional postage may be required for orders outside the US.
