First Edition Thus. 4to; 53; 70; 58 pages; Contents clean and secure in special decorative binding; some minor wear at spine ends and rubbing at corners. Former owner's name neatly on first blank page -- "Adolphus E. J. Gregg." Specially bound in green cloth with beveled edges, gilt lettering and decorative stamping on front board with gilt lettering and image of the church on spine; floral endpapers; all edges gilt. Front cover contains a cast metal relief sculpture of St. Botolph Church and Lincolnshire Village, inset in beveled frame after F.B. Schell's engraving of the iconic Boston, Lincolnshire landmark. Frontispiece portrait of the author by F. T. Stuart with her facsimile autograph with glassine protective leaf. Full page illustrations designed by Miss C. A. Northam and J. Francis Murphy; the titlepage, and text illustrations designed by Edmund H. Garrett. All illustrations engraved by Geo. T. Andrew after the artists' works. Jean Ingelow (1820 â" 1897) was an English poet and novelist, who gained sudden fame in 1863. She also wrote several stories for children. Born in Boston, Lincolnshire, Ingelow was the daughter of William Ingelow, a banker. St Botolph's Church is the Anglican parish church of Boston, Lincolnshire, England. It has been referred to as "Boston Stump" since it was constructed. The church has one of the tallest medieval towers in the country, with a height of approximately 266 feet 9 inches (81.31m). It was long used as a landmark for the Lincolnshire fishermen; on a clear day it can be seen from Norfolk. This special edition collects together three seperate works; each with its own pagination (c. 172 pages total).

OCLC and RLIN list only six copies. Wear to head and heel of spine, faint soiling to boards, otherwise about very good with hinges starting very faint staining to top edge on a few leaves, but still tight and clean. A nice copy of this uncommon title in a clear archival jacket.
