Zarate was sen…t to Peru by the Emperor Charles V in 1543, as a tax collector to implement the Emperor s New Laws . He was in Lima at the time of Gonzalo Pizarro s revolt, and the work concludes with Pizarro s execution and the subsequent incorporation of Peru into the Spanish Empire in 1548. The first edition, in Spanish, appeared at Antwerp in 1555. He had access to important sources that gave the historical work reliability. The plates show the life of Peruvians as well as representations of battles. Condition: Exlibris stamps to titles, handwritten note on front end paper of both volumes, book plates to front paste down, corners bumped, some light foxing, rubbing to extremities else a very good set.

Provenance: William Stirling Maxwell (1818-1878), supralibros, Keir House ?Proverbs? collection bookplate (rear pastedown), small armorial bookplate with his ?I am ready,? etc. mottos (front pastedown); with Quaritch, collation note 1958; with Maggs, 1993, catalogue 1160, no. 27; Kenneth Rapoport, bookplate.*** Only Lyonese edition of a popular collection of over 2000 Castilian proverbs with French translations, first published in 1605, by a lexicographer, royal interpreter, and the first translator of any part of Don Quixote into French (part 1, published the same year as this edition). For each proverb the Spanish and French texts are printed together in one paragraph, differentiated by their type fonts. Gratet-Duplessis praised Oudin?s proverb collection as the best French source for Spanish proverbs, noting the precision of the French translations, and the utility of Oudin?s short explanatory notes. Pierre Rigaud, the printer of this edition, did not do the text justice; frequent incorrect spellings and weird punctuation occasionally render either the translations or the originals nonsensical (e.g., ?La mujer que poco hila, sempre trae mala camisa? is translated as ?La femme qui peut filer [instead of peu file], toujours, porte meschante chemise? - p. 95). This edition follows the Brussels 1608 edition in adding a second part, containing a 16th-century epistolary jeu d?esprit by the inventor Blasco de Garay: a series of letters composed entirely of proverbs and aphorisms. It concludes with the Dialogo entre un viejo e amor, a dramatic poem first published in 1511, attributed to Rodrigo Cota de Maguaque, in which Love persuades an old man who had been resigned to his solitude to try again, and then proceeds to mock him cruelly. The spine is separated into six compartments by the raised sewing supports, each of which, aside from that bearing the citron morocco label, is decorated with… attractive floral tools. The large gilt armorial crest consisting of a Pegasus head and wings "LTHD" on upper cover, earl's coronet and "EDDE" on lower cover. The edges of the text block are stained a solid red. The binding is in exceptional condition, with only the slightest bit of wear. The text itself is in excellent condition. The text of the poem is set in Black Letter and is adorned with attractive woodcut initials and head- and tail-pieces throughout. Creede's woodcut printer's device appears on the title page. Excellent. Provenance: Tollemache, Earls of Dysart, Helmingham (supralibros, engraved armorial bookplate on title verso, note on front pastedown in hand of Lionel Tollemache, fourth Earl). This is the fourth complete printing (first 1584) of the first complete English translation of Virgil's "Aeneid", translated by Thomas Phaer (c. 1510-1560), who was responsible for the first nine books, and Thomas Twyne (c.1500-1581), who translated the final three after Phaer's death. The Phaer-Twyne translation was preceded by Gavin Douglas' version in Scots (1553) and a fragmentary verse translation (books 2 and 4) by Henry Howard, Duke of Surrey (1557). "The complete translation of the 'Aeneid' by Thomas Phaer and Thomas Twyne has every reason to be considered the central English Renaissance 'Aeneid.' The publication history tells the story succinctly. Whereas no other translation of Virgil was printed in England more than twice until the 1650s (and only the Earl of Surrey's translation of Book 4 was printed more than once in England during this time), the translation by Phaer and Twyne went through eight editions, running from 1558 through to 1620. It influenced the translations by Richard Stanyhurst (1582), Sir John Harington (1604) and Sir Thomas Wroth (1620), and it was still one of the most important subtexts for John Vicars' 'The XII Aeneids of Virgil' (1632). Much as the translation by Annibale Caro came to dominate the market for Virgil in Italian, the Phaer-Twyne 'Aeneid' became the English standard. It was not until the eighteenth century that any English translation of Virgil's epic went through more editions. "That this translation would become so successful would have been difficult to predict from its inauspicious beginnings. The initial translator, Thomas Phaer, was a physician and solicitor in the Marches of Wales. He published nothing else in verse and would have made an unlikely candidate for a great interpreter of Virgil. Nevertheless, in 1555 he began work, hoping to be the first to 'sette open' the gate so that future translators could follow. Although Phaer seems to have been aware of both the Middle Scots translation by Gavin Douglas and the two books by the Earl of Surrey, he presented his version of the Aeneid as the start of a new line of translations. By December 1557, Phaer had completed a version of Books 1-7. He had these printed in 1558. By April 1560, he had completed up to the end of Book 9. But late in that spring, he suffered a riding accident that ruined his hand and would soon cost him his life. "Before his death on 12 August, he sent all that he had finished of his translation - which was then up to line 286 of Book 10 - to William Wightman, a friend of his in Pembrokeshire. This friend fervently believed in Phaer's literary gifts and, after Phaer had passed away, he searched the deceased's house for any trace of remaining verses. But there was none to be found. In 1562, Wightman resigned himself to publishing what he had of Phaer's Virgil, hoping that another author might complete the project. Just over a decade later, the work was taken up by Thomas Twyne, who was a physician in London. This is the second issue - identical in every respect to the first issue of 1597, except for the date 1598 on the main title - of the first edition of an important travelogue compiled by the humanist historian Matthaeus Dresser (1536-1607). The main part of this workis an abridged translation of the Historia de las cosas mas notables, ritos, y costumbres, del gran reyno de la Chinaof Juan González de Mendoza (Rome, 1585). Appended to this report on China is an account of Virginia (pp. 171-231), which is a translation into German by 'Christophorus P.' ofA Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia(1588), by Thomas Hariot (Harriot) - the first book on North America to be written by an Englishman who had had first-hand experience of the continent. The work is completed by brief accounts of Abyssinia and Persia. In 1580, the Spanish Augustinian Juan Pedro González de Mendoza (1545-1618) had been nominated by Philip II to lead a new embassy to the Ming emperor of China, in order to request permission for the Augustinians to establish a mission and conduct commerce there. Despite travelling no further than Mexico, Mendoza was able to gather from various sources extensive information on China which proved sufficient for him to write his importantHistoria, published in Rome in 1585. Thomas Hariot was a member of thefirst Raleigh-sponsored settlement on Roanoke Island (1585-86). In spite of its modest 13,000-word length, his account of the colony contains a wealth of detail. The first issue of Dressler's Historien und Bericht von dem newlicher Zeit erfundenen Königreich China, including its Virginia appendix,had appeared in 1597 (Leipzig : Schnellboltz). It is an exceptional rarity, but the second issue of 1598 is no less scarce, having appeared only once at auction in over a century (Swann, 1972).
