Illustrated paper covered boards printed in yellow, red, and black, in a matching dustjacket (unclipped). Chipping to spine, spine ends, and corners of dustjacket. Two closed tears to front and rear panels of jacket, which have been repaired by a previous owner with transparent tape (which has not yellowed) on verso of jacket. Jacket is now protected in a mylar cover. Some light bumps to head and tail of boards and spine ends, with some light wear to tail of boards. Signed and inscribed inblack ink by Hawkins on dedication page. Interior otherwise clean and unmarked. Binding sound. Children's author Quail Hawkins was also a bookseller, and worked at Sather Gate bookshop in Berkeley for over 40 years. Hawkins hired a young Beverly Cleary in 1941 to assist with the Christmas rush at the bookshop, which along with her encouragement, led to Cleary's first book contract.
