[A notable salesman sample photo album depicting 85 municipal, private, and educational public buildings erected during the Progressive Era in and around Kansas City, Missouri, all fitted with Kewanee tubular steam boilers by the noted company. These crisp images capture this large Western city expanding its hospitals, charitable organizations, education footprint, and commercial opportunities through the first decade of the Pendergast political machine's control, and reflect the growing influence of civic-minded women & religious organizations, and an upsurge in social reform public welfare advocates].
[KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI -- PROGRESSIVE ERA SALES ALBUM]. [BURTON, Clarence A. (Manager Kewanee); ANDERSON, Lawrence Chandler & ANDERSON, D.E. (Photography Studio Owners)].

Añadir al carritoOblong 4to. 11.25 x 8.5 x 2.25 in. With 85 linen-backed silver gelatin photographs, sized 9.75 x 8 in. and all mounted on linen hinges at gutter margin, nearly all w/ photographer's imprint at lower corner w/in the negative, nearly all w/ both pencil manuscript annotations, and neatly typed labels added later w/ identifying name, location & specifying boiler installed (occasional dustsoiling, some w/ creasing at corners, minor fraying to the linen backings). HP loose leaf post-binder, nickel-plated screw-posts at gutter margin, recent calf covering the flexible calf originals, retaining the stamping on rear pastedown dated 1904-1905, still a very good exemplar. This exceptional salesman sample photo album opens with a striking photograph of Kewanee steam boilers, firebox boilers, and steam boiler fittings sprawled across a warehouse yard, next to the historic J.W. Jenkins Music Co. building, and with overhead hoist track running the length of the yard. The remainder of the album focuses primarily on all of the different buildings, and boiler inventory numbers, or specifications indicated on the labels on versos, with 18 or nearly 20% devoted to hospitals, nursing facilities, and sanitariums featured. These include St. Joseph's Hospital (near today's River Club) which was the first private hospital in Kansas City, MO, and this 1910 facility featured one of the first specialty X-Ray departments; as well as the Osteopath College, "Skarritt Hospital" which was the Skarritt Bible & Training School for nurses, women missionaries, and deaconesses, first established in 1892; the Osteopathic Hospital, originally Wesley Hospital, later taken over by the War Dept.; Nurses Home at 27th & Paseo; Mercy Hospital, or Children's Mercy Hospital at 1750 Independence, and now serving as Kansas City Univ. Administration Building, and Grace Hospital at 9th & Harrison. Of particular interest are the photos depicting such historic buildings as: Wheatley-Provident Colored Hospital, now the sole surviving hospital building in Kansas City that was established and run by the African-American community from 1902-1972, located at 1826 Forest, and was one of the first hospitals in the U.S. entirely staffed by African-American doctors, nurses, and administrators; the Willows Maternity Sanitarium, which originally opened in 1905 in a Victorian home, but was moved to the Asa Maddox mansion and converted to a maternity hospital by 1911. The Willows provided unwed pregnant daughters of middle-class and affluent families a place to give birth away from public scrutiny before offering the children for adoption. Many of the young women were forced to enter their home by their parents as they did not support the daughter marrying the father of their child, due to religious or cultural differences. Sadly, nearly all of the records were later entirely destroyed after the Sanitarium closed. Another notable is the photo of the newly built Leeds Kansas City Tuberculosis Hospital, a 2-story concrete facility that operated from 1915 until 1964, and was later demolished in 1971. It was designed by E.P. Majorie and included wide porches, long sleeping wards, but unfortunately was continually poorly run with significant funds continually diverted to feed the coffers of the Pendergast political machine. "Girls Homes" for young orphan girls, displaced homeless children, as well as unwed teenagers are also depicted, such as the St. Joseph Orphan Home, operated as an Orphan Girl's Home, but actually also served to temporarily house children for parents unable, or incapable of caring for their children, including those where the children were being abused, or in danger. Those for boys and young man included the Kansas City Country Day School, launched through the reform efforts of Cassie James Ward HIll (now the quadrangle of the Pembroke Hill School-Ward Parkway Campus); or, the Boys Hotel at Admiral & Highland where self-supporting working boys were assigned to live until they aged out at 18, otherwise most would have been homeless, and provided additional vocational training. Also captured by Anderson is the Athenaeum Club building, now the historic Delta Athenaeum Building at 900 E. Linwood, founded and focused on training women prior to Suffrage in home economics, encouraging civic good and education, and after Suffrage focused on current events, in opposition to the ever-growing influence of the Pendergast corruption. Also featured are such buildings as the Scottish Rite Temple at 15th & Troost, designed by Frank Howe, and was the first building erected in Missouri purely for Masonic functions and ritual work; the E.C. White School, which in 1965 was demolished to make room for the new Plaza Branch Library; St. Agnes Academy Catholic School once located at 134 No. Hardesty Ave., the Blue Hills Golf Club at 61st & Virginia; as well as several different Churches across Kansas City, MO, Kansas City, KS, and Independence, MO. The automotive industry contributed to the remaking of Kansas City in the opening decades of the 20th-Century, with photographs here capturing the famed Sweeney Auto School, the massive Automobile & Tractor School completed to 10 stories in 1917, and with its 80 foot electric lighted sign towering above the top floor of the building; the stately Oakland Motor Cars Dealership, along with the sprawling complex of the Rahe's Automobile School located in North Kansas City, MO. The burgeoning flower and houseplant industry in the post-World War I era is reflected by many of the photographs depicting thriving greenhouse and flower businesses, such as Renick Greenhouse, Leeds, MO, Jarrett Greenhouse on Troost, Renick-Martin Greenhouses, Swope Park Greenhouse, Jensen Greenhouse and Jensen Flowers, as well as the striking A.F. Barbe Flower House & Greenhouse with towering smoke stack above at 15th & Lawn. Kewaunee Steam Boilers began production in 1891 in Kewanee, IL after changing the name from Haxton Steam to the Western Tub.…
