In a gently used, bright, untorn, unclipped dust jacket. -- A 1988 novel by June Burnett that explores the personal transformation of an "ordinary" woman against the backdrop of the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp. The story focuses on Lydia Richardson, a defensive middle-aged woman who initially joins the protest camp as an escape from her own troubled past rather than out of political conviction. The narrative takes place over a single night and a subsequent "Day of Action" at the military base. Lydia, who sees herself as an outsider among the predominantly middle-class feminists at the camp, reflects on a life marked by personal damage. Past Trauma: She grapples with the cycle of abuse, having been an abused child who later became an abuser herself. Loss and Rejection: Her backstory includes the death of her husband from cancer and rejection by the father of her daughter. Transformation: Through her experiences at the camp, Lydia begins to move away from the mistakes of her past, eventually realising she has the power to shape her own life for the better. Themes and Style: - Personal vs. Political: While set at the Greenham Common Peace Movement, the book is less about the "nuts and bolts" of the camp's daily life and more about the internal fight of one woman to reverse a trend of personal damage. - Identity: The novel challenges the notion of "ordinariness," following Lydia's journey toward the realisation that "no woman is ever just 'ordinary'". - Humour and Defensiveness: Lydia is portrayed as a difficult but colourful character who uses a sense of humour to mask her defensiveness and feeling of being "in transit".…
