31pp. Square Octavo [23 cm x 20 cm] Red illustrated wrappers. Very good. Vertical fold as issued. Promotional piece from the Northern Pacific for service to Yellowstone with descriptions of the area, lodgings, scenic features, tours, etc. Illustrated throughout with black and white views and a double-page map at the center. Opens with an essay by Emerson Hough 'Yellowstone National Park - A Tribute.' "Only Burlington-Northern Pacific serves three of Yellowstone's famous gateways, Gardiner, Cody, and Red Lodge, and only Burlington - Northern Pacific offers a choice of three scenic routes to or from the Park. The most direct service to Yellowstone is via the Route of the North Coast Limited, through St. Paul-Minneapolis, Minnesota wooded farmlands, the Bad Lands of North Dakota and the ranch country of Montana." - p.5. The Northern Pacific Railway was not only the first railroad to build a branch line to the park boundary to the North Entrance at Gardiner, but it also provided service to the last entrance which was opened to the park, the Northeast Entrance, In addition, the Northern Pacific was heavily involved in the development of the hotel facilities in the park. The involvement of the Northern Pacific with the park dates back to 1870, with the exploration of the park by the Washburn Expedition. According to legend, the party concluded that the natural wonders should be preserved as a national park. Nathaniel Pitt Langsford, who was on the expedition, publicized the wonders he had seen in the park on his return to the East Coast, and Jay Cooke, financier for the Northern Pacific Railroad, hired him as a publicist to obtain financial support for his railroad and to promote the park.

Uncolored folding map of west central Wyoming laid into red printed wrappers. fine condition, wrappers very lightly worn. Shows from Casper at the bottom right to the eastern edge of Yellowstone Park at the west and Billings, Montana in the north. One the verso is a small uncolored map of the western United States showing the Burlington system and listing passenger agents at many locations. This is not to be confused with a promotional pamphlet which utilized the same wrappers, reading The Big Horn Basin, which was 36 pages of text on the region. There are no indications on the wrappers or map which would indicate that they were ever attached or that there was additional text.

Railroad timetable-style map with eight panels. Fair condition only, with a substantial (6+x2 cm.) area missing at one fold junction and along the adjacent horizontal fold in eastern Big Horn County, residue of earlier tape repairs, and clean splits along folds mended. The map on the verso shows southern Montana and north-central Wyoming, roughly from Big Timber, Montana in the northwest to Casper, Wyoming in the southeast, with the river system, reservations, and forest preserves clearly shown. Text on the recto touts Free Lands for Homesteaders and provides information about the climate and resources of the area. The date is taken from the text which mentions a registration process for eligibility for free land which was to take place at Lander, Wyoming on August 4, 1906. In spite of the condition, this piece is largely intact with considerable information on this little-documented region.

Timetable map of the Western United States, fully colored by state. Very good condition, with small separation at one fold junction and one short tear along a fold. The other side is uncolored except for the front and back covers, when folded. Shows the United States from Lake Michigan west with all major rail lines highlighted. All stations along these lines are marked and named. The east-west lines through the far west are the Northern Pacific, Union/Central Pacific, Southern Pacific and Atlantic & Pacific. By this time, this line had virtually abandoned the use of the name Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad in favor of the less formal Burlington Route. The text side contains general information along with promotions for the smoking and dining cars available on Burlington trains.
