Diese Herausgebertätigkeit war mit einer ständigen Sichtung der pastoraltheologischen Literatur verbunden, aus der sich auch das vorliegende Werk speist: "Ich wollte mich hinstellen unter die Kanzeln, hinter die Beichtstühle, in die Krankenzimmer, in die Studierstuben und in die geheimen Betkämmerlein der erfahrensten, treuesten und in ihrem Berufe glücklichsten evangelischen Seelsorger, und wollte zusehen und zuhören, wie sie es gemacht, um ihrem heiligen Berufe Genüge zu leisten, um das unwissende und ungläubige Volk zu belehren, Irrende zurecht zu führen, hartherzige Gemüter zu erweichen und lindernden Balsam in verwundete Herzen zu gießen . Ich glaube ohne Ruhmredigkeit behaupten zu dürfen, daß wenige der jetztlebenden Theologen diesen Quellen der praktischen Pastoraltheologie, namentlich derjenigen, die sich auf das eigentliche Mark der evangelischen Wirksamkeit bezieht, mit gleicher Emsigkeit nachgegangen sind wie ich" (Vorrede).
