Klassische Monographie im Sinne der historischen Rechtsschule! - Burchardi (1795-1882), Savigny-Schüler, studierte an den Universitäten in Kiel, Berlin und Göttingen und schlug auf Anraten Savignys die wissenschaftliche Laufbahn ein. In Kiel promovierte er und wurde 1819 Privatdozent in Kiel, im Herbst desgleichen Jahres Extraordinarius an der Universität Bonn und 1821 dort Ordinarius. Ein Jahr später nahm er einen Ruf nach Kiel an (Professor für Römisches Recht), wo er in der juristischen Fakultät Kollege von Falck wurde. Sein bedeutendster Schüler in Kiel war Theodor Mommsen, dessen Doktorvater er war. Wie viele seine Kollegen war er politisch aktiv, war beispielsweise von 1838 bis 1841 Mitglied der Ständeversammlung, zudem war er ab 1844 Richter am Kieler Oberappellationsgericht, wofür er seinen Lehrstuhl aufgab. - Die "restitutio in integrum" ist ein vom Prätor in Antrag gegebenes Mittel, wenn er ein vollzogenes Geschäft nicht gelten lassen will. Dies ist im Kern nach klassischem römischen Recht das Institut der Wiedereinsetzung in den vorigen Stand. Das Werk ist eine klassische Monographie im Sinne der historischen Rechtsschule, auf den Quellen und der Rechtsgeschichte aufgebaut.
