Two September shows bring summer to a close: expressive slipware from Jean-Nicolas Gérard, the potter s potter from Provence, with a heartfelt exhibition review by ceramics expert Sebastian Blackie; and 50 years an artist for Jenny Grevatte. Elsewhere, there is plenty of food for thought and feasts for eyes. We take a whistlestop tour of the life of James Gillray, caricaturist par excellence, whose Lady Strathmore is trying to distract you on the opposite page. Two highly personal works of art David Jones illustrations to the Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Leonard Rosoman s double portrait of Lillian Browse show us artists working in intensely difficult, yet productive, chapters of their lives. And in the work of Julian Trevelyan and Alan Davie, experiment, exploration, and spontaneity abound. Something for everyone, I hope.
