In this memoir of his early life he employs a narrative device that renders with great immediacy and vigour the stages of his personal odyssey: his impoverished turn-of-the-century boyhood in Surrey and North London, his training by the Marine Society, his years as a merchant seaman: G.P.O. clerk, and artist's model in Paris, pre-war Germany, and Switzerland. The early sections of the book are in the third person, each one narrated by a different 'self' called by the nickname - Moony, Jesus, Doctor, Felix, Ethelred - which Budgen bore at that time in his life; and these earlier selves reappear on occasion in the first-person narration of the later sections.
