Stated First Edition. Fine DJ. OVERSIZE! Additional shipping charges may be requested for international & priority orders. A massive coffee-table book. Profusely illustrated. *** "Although steam engines were seldom used for everyday train transportation by 1960, they live on in the minds of those fortunate enough to have experienced them and in the many museums and steam-powered excursions throughout the country. They are especially active in the West, where master photographer Joel Jensen has, for more than twenty-five years, documented these well-restored and maintained veterans in their natural settings doing what they used to - hauling both passengers and freight and delighting rail fans of all ages. This timeless collection takes us back to the end of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth, with captivating images evoking the past. Essays by John Gruber, the president of the Center for Railroad Photography, and Scott Lothes, the project director for the center, help to put these wonderful photographs in context." - Publisher. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st. Cloth, 288 pages, illustrations; 24 cm. SIGNED by Jeff Brouws & Wendy Burton on the half-title page in the year of publication, otherwise unmarked. Stated First Edition. Dust jacket protected in a mylar cover. A fine copy of the first printing. *** "A remarkable collection of images taken by passionate amateurs that have both a historical value and an innocent charm. Jeff Brouws and Wendy Burton have been collecting vernacular railroad photographs for many years, poring through disorganized boxes of snapshots at train shows and swap meets. With a keen editorial eye they have sought out the unusual, the lyrical, the pastoral, and the urban, ultimately assembling a collection that includes railroad landscapes, locomotives, bridges, and people primarily during the age of steam. This fascinating assemblage will appeal to fans of vernacular photography and rail fans alike. It is accompanied by an essay that includes a brief discussion of the aesthetic evolution of railroad photography in the early to mid-twentieth century and the phenomenon of the International Engine Picture Club, which acted as a clearing house and swapping mechanism for rail fans. 250 duotone photographs." - Publisher. Size: 8vo. SIGNED. Collectible.

Añadir al carrito23.5 x 15 cm. 271 pages : illustrations (some color). Original Hardcover in protective Mylar. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. Jeff Brouws has crisscrossed the country for two decades, documenting an America that is at once quintessential and peculiar. Readymades is a quirky, multi-layered catalog of this ascendant photographer's work: partially painted pickup trucks, bowling alley signs, vibrant-hued houses that defy the monotony of the suburbs, abandoned drive-in movie theaters. Brouws treats his subjects as readymade art found in the landscape, brought together to create an idiosyncratic roadside panorama. Provocative essays by leading writers and cultural commentators such as Luc Sante, DJ Waldie, M. Mark, Diana Gaston, Bruce Caron, and Phil Patton are juxtaposed with these images of all that is unique in the uniform, and striking in the mundane. (Publisher) Sprache: english.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: fine. First Edition. Wonderful homage to or extention of Ed Ruscha's volume. The edition is 1000, but this is one of twenty deluxe copies that came in a black cloth folder with an extra B&W print (signed, 5 of 20, and dated 1992), in addition to the paperback book itself. The book is inscribed, presumably to a Santa Barbara local (where this was aquired). The archival print is in lovely condition. The paperback book has a minor corner crease and a touch of minor wear (solid VG+). The cloth folder is in fine condition. "In our mobile society where does one go?" Incidentally, this book was lost in our inventory for some time.
