Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. "The New Bridge over the Hudson River at New York" in Scientific American, vol 84, no. 18, 2May 1896, pp 273-288 with the article on the front cover and pg 279 (a full column of about 750 words). Extracted from a largerbound volume. Also there's an ancient almost-gone horizontal fold in the issue's middle, as well as a nearly-faded-away oval owner stamp on the frit wrapper bottom. This beauty appears in the pages of Scientific American for 1896, and discusses a proposal for a bridge to connect Manhattan to Jersey, and to do so spectacularly. The plan was for the bridge to be twice as tall and twice as long as the Brooklyn Bridge, making it "one of the greatest feats of engineering" ever.  The terminal and approaches would've been an issue in a few decades later had it been built, as they occupied a fair piece of land from about 59th/11th & 12th and 51st/8th, plus the ramping for six-rails-wide railway access.  The time would come for a bridge in 1929 when the work on the existing Hudson River Bridge (now known as the George Washington Bridge) would be built further north in Washington heights. In any event, this 1896 bridge was quite lovely.…

Scarce large albumen prints of the beginning of the construction of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, the most daring engineering feat of its time. The images are held by the Museum of the City of New York, but not by the Brooklyn Museum or Brooklyn Public Library. Showing construction of the bridge, an object of fascination for the public, although newspaper editorials scoffed at the enormous undertaking. The Talfor view is taken from the Brooklyn side looking toward Manhattan across the East River, with a massive pile of rocks in the forming the base of the pier. In the foreground wooden hoists frame the foundation, and temporary construction shacks surround it. In the middle ground lies the East River, and tall -masted ships can be seen at anchor on the Manhattan side. Robert B. Talfor is known for the very rare 'Photographic Views of Red River Raft' of 1873. The 113 hand colored photographs measuring 9 x 7" document the landscape and the lives of the crews working on this massive project to remove the thousand year old log jam which blocked the Red River in Louisiana. The lot sold for $93,750, in February 2018. During the Civil War Talfor was a topographic engineer who mapped out battlefields. (The maps are listed on OCLC.) After the war he founded a photography studio in Greenpoint (Brooklyn). Curtain's Greenpoint Directory of 1868/9 records him in Brooklyn as follows: Talfor, Robert B. photographs, Washington c Greenpoint Ave, h. Eagle. By the early 1870s Talfor was in Louisiana taking the striking images of the Red River Raft project. The Talfor albumen photograph: 16 x 10 1/2" laid down on board 19 x 14 1/4". Title printed below the image with "East River Bridge" in an elaborate type font. Edges of board rubbed, corners slightly chipped. Photograph with a few small marks at lower edge, outside image. Period note on verso, "Which do you put first, [ditto] faces glass". Possibly a window display note? [with] 3 additional large albumen photographs of the terminal buildings under construction at each end of the Brooklyn Bridge. These massive multistory shed-like structures were also called terminal sheds; here commuters embarked and disembarked to take other mass transit. Two of the images appear to be the Manhattan terminal building (at Park Row) under construction, because tall buildings surround the cast iron structure, and tram lines are visible in the road. These two images depict the terminal at the very beginning of construction (a close up of the steel outer shell, with workers in the foreground and standing on the roof ridge), and the finished building, with city dwellers passing on the sidewalk below. One is "N.Y. Station, East River Bridge.", ca. 1875 according to the Museum of the City of New York website. The third albumen likely shows the Brooklyn terminal building under construction, as the surrounding area is not as developed as the Manhattan side. Two men stand in the foreground of the half completed steel structure. The three terminal building photographs: 8 1/2 x 6 1/4" mounted on board, 14 x 11". Board dusty, one scratch at lower edge of print. Second image, 16 1/2 x 13" on board 20 1/4 x 16 1/4", board extensively chipped at edges, one corner repaired on verso with archival tape; damp stains top edge of image. Third image 10 3/4 x 8 1/2", borders extensively scuffed & marked. Images are mounted in archival mounts. Scarce photographs of the very beginnings of the construction of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge.…

(BROOKLYN BRIDGE) An eye-catching example of letterhead featuring the East River Suspension Bridge (Brooklyn Bridge). The upper portion of the letterhead depicts the bridge in color, with a brief blurb about the bridges history below. The image was from publisher Charles Magnus & Co.s 100 Views of New York and Environs (c. 1870). In very good condition with some wear and spotting. Light wear along original fold lines. Images and text on verso. Size 19.5 x 16.25 Inches. This engrossing c. 1939 folding map of New York City was prepared by local cartographic firm Hagstrom for the Triborough Bridge Authority. Meant primarily to inform motorists, it also serves as a celebration of the vision of urban planner and highway enthusiast Robert Moses. At the same time, the map chronicles one of Moses' rare defeats, the never-built 'Battery-Brooklyn Bridge.' A Closer Look Highly practical, the map includes a host of information on highways, major local roads, bridges and tunnels, ferries, airports and airfields, parks (another domain in Moses' kingdom), golf courses, and more. The map also includes some aesthetic flairs, including the ornate text used for waterways, harkening back to the engraved maps of the early modern period. Several important buildings are illustrated or otherwise indicated, including sports stadiums and Manhattan's major train stations (the only nod to the existence of the city's extensive train and subway network). Proposed or ephemeral structures such as the never-built Secaucus Airport and the short-lived Madison Square Garden Bowl in Queens are also included. Another obvious element of the map, marked out in orange, is the site of the 1939 World's Fair. Again, Robert Moses was a major driving force behind this feature of the city's landscape, having desired for years to transform the swamp-like wetlands, which were being used as a dumping ground for coal ash, into a beautiful park. The main purpose of the map, however, is to celebrate the opening of the Triborough and Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, opened in 1936 and 1937, respectively. The Triborough was the crowning achievement of Moses' career, a clear demonstration of the ease and efficiency of movement that could be achieved, even in the urban jungle of New York City, with enough concrete and willpower. While cursorily providing toll rates, most of the verso is occupied by photographs and renderings of the new bridges, including a miniaturized version of Edward Spofford's c. 1936 intricate bird's-eye view (also sold by us TriboroughBridgeAuthority-spofford-1936). Robert Moses and the Triborough Bridge Authority This map, like much else in New York City at the time, was connected to the influential urban planner Robert Moses. The Triborough Bridge (Robert F. Kennedy Bridge) was born of New York City's ambition to modernize its infrastructure and improve transportation during the early 20th century. Initially proposed in the 1920s as a means of connecting Manhattan, the Bronx, and Queens, the project gained momentum with the formation of the Triborough Bridge Authority in 1933, led by Moses. The bridge's construction was envisioned as part of the city's response to the increasing demand for efficient transportation routes and as a strategy to provide jobs during the Great Depression. Funded in part by federal New Deal programs, including the Public Works Administration, the ambitious project faced numerous financial and engineering challenges before construction began in earnest in 1934. The Triborough Bridge opened to traffic on July 11, 1936, and immediately transformed regional connectivity, facilitating commerce and travel between the boroughs while embodying the era's spirit of bold, transformative infrastructure projects. Its completion marked a pivotal moment in New York City's evolution into a modern, car-centric metropolis. When the Power Broker's Power Broke Perhaps the most noticeable and certainly the most unusual feature of this map is the non-existent 'Brooklyn-Battery Bridge,' noted as 'under construction.' To call this an exaggeration would be an understatement; 'under consideration' would be much more accurate. Moses was an ardent proponent of bridges, considering them easier and cheaper to build than tunnels, and more aesthetically pleasing to boot. But even though he had considerable political support at the city, state, and.…

Fair. Closed margin tears professionally repaired on verso. Two closed tears extending 2 and 3 inches respectively within the printed image. Some creasing. Closed edge tears. Size 21.25 x 33 Inches. This is an 1883 Currier and Ives lithograph view of the Brooklyn Bridge, issued to capitalize on popular obsession following the opening of 'Great East River Bridge', one of the greatest technological and architectural wonders of the late 19th century. The Brooklyn Bridge When it opened in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge stood as a marvel of engineering and a symbol of urban progress. Spanning the East River and connecting the cities of New York (Manhattan) and Brooklyn, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, with a main span of 1,595 feet. Designed by John A. Roebling and completed by his son, Washington Roebling, the bridge showcased cutting-edge techniques, including the use of steel-wire cables and massive stone towers. On its opening day, May 24, 1883, the bridge was celebrated with great fanfare, with thousands of pedestrians and vehicles crossing it, underscoring its importance as a vital transportation link and an architectural icon. Publication History and Census This view was published by Currier and Ives in 1883. This piece does not appear in OCLC; we note only a handful of digitized examples, all in private hands. A similar view by Currier and Ives depicts the bridge from farther away, with river steamers in the East River instead of the ferry. References: Conningham, F.
