Añadir al carritoUnbound. Condición: Good. First Edition. Collection of seven provincially printed broadsides relating to the Crimean war, all printed in 1854 or 1855, the smallest measuring approximately 170mm x 370mm in size and the rest approximately 245mm x 370mm. All lightly browned, some light foxing and light creasing, a few small nicks a…nd tears, one 'News From Sebastopol!' with small chip to left hand margin and small hole to centre catching a few letters but with no loss of sense, 'Statistics and Statements' with loss to bottom right hand corner, but no loss of text, 'Bombardment of Sebastopol' is laid on to linen. 'Bombardment of Sebastopol' was printed by T. & W. Plant in Clare Street, Nottingham, possibly descendants of James Plant (see BBTI); the remainder were printed by Thomas Stevenson in Wheeler-Gate, probably the same printer as the Thomas Stevenson & Co. located in Middle Pavement Nottingham in 1847 (see BBTI). A mixture of news from the Crimean war which was one of the first conflicts to be extensively documented in reports and photographs. The topics here include death numbers, notable events and diplomatic developments, and are taken from a number of sources, including European and Russian papers. Lord Raglan is noted in one as "a good rider, and does not appear to feel the want of the arm which he left at Waterloo". All are unrecorded in Library Hub Size: Folio. Broadside.

Añadir al carritoEphemera. Condición: Very Good. A collection of 12 broadsides preserved on heavy cardstock backing, most with handwritten notes in the margin or on the verso; size ranges from about 218x130 to 430x172 mm; dating from 1859-1889, with most in the 1860s. Condition is generally VG, with some light rubbing, age-toning, and dust-soili…ng; the occasional chip or scuff; sometimes notations are inked directly onto the broadside, or even filling in text that's been chipped away. Notations indicate that many of these were from the collection of Ed. M. Cosley, they also note, sometimes at length, locations names, locations, or other details about some of the performers listed (for example, a broadside for an exhibition of the Troy Grammar School lists George Iott in a music trio; on the verso, it is noted that he later traveled with quartet of singers). Includes Troy Union School, Troy Grammar School, Mr. Ascher's Grand Concert at Mayo's Hall, Benefit for the Ladies' Aid Society, Grand Concert at Chaffee Hall, Coronation of the May Queen at Murphy Hall, the Merchants' Canial at [Troy Opera House] (indicated by notation). Some broadsides identify the printer -- Times Printer, Miami Union. A potentially very rich treasure trove of local history, worthy of further study.

Añadir al carritoTwo Broadsides,The New Colored Menace: World's Greatest Heavyweight Al Walker. 44x31 cm (17¼x12"). [c.1929]. Ripple & Curran Manage the Greatest Boxing Stable in the West - Directing Fighters with a Future Who Fight. With a list of 7 boxers, each with a short biography. [c.1920s]. General light wear, with some old folds, pinhol…es, normal aging, minor closed tears at edges, etc., the Walker broadside may have some manuscript additions; both pieces very good. The Walker broadside is significant in that Black heavyweights were essentially eliminated from fighting for the heavyweight championship. After Jack Johnson, white America wanted no part of a black heavyweight, until Joe Louis came on the scene in the 1930s. It is doubtful Walker's record would have made a top ten fighter, but he did fight George Godfrey. The second broadside features a list of western prizefighters, including Cowboy Billy Owens, a Native American heavyweight.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Near Fine. First Edition. A broadside printed by S. Kneeland in 1758 concerning the billeting of soldiers and officers during the French and Indian War. Title continues: Billeting Officers and Soldiers. An Act. Passed by the Great General Court or Assembly of His Majesty's Province of Massachusetts-Bay in New England:… Begun and Held at Boston upon Wednesday the twenty-fifth Day May 1757. An Act making Provision for Quartering and Billeting Recruiting Officers and Recruits in his Majesty's Regular Forces, employed for the Protection and Defence of his Majesty's Dominions in North-America." The law required town officials to quarter and billet recruiting officers and recruits. Disputes over the funding of the war would help lay the groundwork for the American Revolution. We find no physical copies in OCLC. Cushing, Mass. Laws 628. Broadside, double sided, 13 x 8 inches. Slight creasing, small holes from being previously bound, near fine overall.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Very good. An outstanding example of (presumably) amateur political protest art, depicting the House Un-American Activities Committee as a rabid King Kong on the verge of seizing the helpless damsel Civil Liberties. 1959 was the Committee's 21st year of existence, and it had by then become quite commonplace to condemn… the HUAC's extremism, so much so that President Truman, in April of that year, called the committee "the most un-American thing in the country today." Still, it would take sixteen more years for HUAC to be officially abolished. We've been unable to trace the artist, but he (again, we presume) was clearly skilled, striking just the right balance between cartoon and editorial styles. A vivid piece of vernacular propaganda from the early days of the HUAC's decline. Light-brown paper hand-drawn in felt-tip marker; 24" by 18" approx. Evidence of having been hung up at corners: small pieces of tape at upper edge; two chips at bottom; plus 2" tear at center of bottom edge. Shallow creases (folded into eighths). Else clean, if mildly toned. Very good. Signed by an artist ("Vid") and dated in July 1959.
