A very good copy with very good dustwrapper in the original blue decorative cloth binding with 16 tipped in colour plates by Brock and Brittan. Undated but 1930's and commissioned by Boots the Chemists. The wrapper has a pasted portrait to the front and is complete but with a small tear and a little nibbling to the top spine edge. The spine is darker. It is in a protective wrap. The blue cloth binding is very bright and clean with gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. There is some pulling to the spine. Internally there is some offsetting from the advertisements on the wrapper ends to the endpapers. The frontispiece and title page have light spotting and the frontispiece has a couple of creases. Contents otherwise very clean. There is a recurrent paper flaw affecting some pages, which creates a light crease line from the gutter diagonally out into the text page for a couple of inches. Page 290 was opened poorly - with some tearing at the base in the gutter - this has been repaired with small loss from the bottom edge and there is small loss from the bottom edge on p 291. Text is not affected.

Brittan", 18 x 34,5 cm (Passepartout Innenmaß), 45 x 62 cm (Rahmen). Unter Glas gerahmt. zum Werk Der Betrachter blickt wie in einer Weitwinkelperspektive auf die Landschaft. Dabei weitet sich der spärliche Bewuchs des schottischen Hochlandheidekrauts - gleichsam stellvertretend für das Sehfeld - keilförmig in das Bild hinein, um die Bildgrenzen sogleich seitlich zu übersteigen. Durch diese Weitung des Blicks wirken bereits die Gegenstände des allernächsten Vordergrundes entfernt, obwohl sie vor der zusehends diffundierenden Landschaft beinahe greifbar scheinen. Der perspektivisch erwirkte Entzug verleiht der Landschaft einen visionären Charakter, der durch die bläulichen, sich bis in den Vordergrund hinein verbreitenden Nebelschwaden ebenso verstärkt wird wie durch die Schafe, die sich mit zunehmender Entfernung zusehends als visuelle Anhaltspunkte verlieren. Brittan was born in Plymouth, and lived for many years in Tavistock, examples of his work are in the Plymouth Art Gallery collections. A contemporary of F. J. Widgery, and like him was commissioned to illustrated several books, including a sumptuous edition of the Exmoor classic romantic thriller Lorna Doone (1911). Brian Le Messurier, Dartmoor Artists, page 52, " He painted in both oils and watercolours, but is best known as a watercolourist. Latterly he favoured the lichen-covered rock or boulder in the foreground ".
