Hardback. Condición: Fair. Katzia Cebekhulu left his home in the township of Mpumalanga in Zululand in 1988 to go to Johannesburg. He was escaping a life of poverty, brutality and petty crime. But in Johannesburg, far from finding a salvation, he entered another brutal world, and his introduction to it came from Winnie Mandela. Mrs Mandela made Katiza Cebekhulu a member of the Mandela United Football Club, having him live in her house in Soweto and sending him to school. But the price of her patronage was high and Katiza soon found himself caught up in the death of Stompie Moeketsie, who according to Katiza, was beaten on Mrs Mandela's orders and whose death was to lead to her being tried for kidnap and assault. What Katiza says he saw that day in December 1988 is evidence that the alibi which enabled Winnie Mandela to walk free was a lie, and what he says he saw in the months following Stompie's death suggests her involvement in the deaths of several young black township activists. This is Katzia's story.…

Paperback. Condición: New. For many years, UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi was known for his charisma, charm and brio: he convinced millions of his fellow countrymen and also international statesmen that he was Angola's and the West's best hope for democratic rule. More than 30 years after writing a sympathetic biography of Savimbi, Fred Bridgland sets the record straight. Based on new evidence that has come to light, he reveals the rebel leader's murderous legacy. In the 1970s and 1980s, when Angola was a hotbed of the Cold War, few people would have believed that Savimbi was a manipulative and paranoid tyrant prepared to kill anyone he viewed as a threat to his power. Tito Chingunji, the brilliant young foreign secretary of Savimbi's UNITA movement, who approached Bridgland to write the original biography in the early 1980s, risked his life to help Bridgland tell the true story of what was going on behind the scenes. This is an account of the intense friendship that developed between the two men, the adventures they shared and the terrifying challenges they faced as they revealed Savimbi's true face.…

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The Angolan Civil War lasted over a quarter of a century, from 1975 to 2002. Beginning as a power struggle between two former liberation movements, the MPLA and UNITA, it became a Cold War struggle with involvement from the Soviet Union, Cuba, South Africa and the USA. This book examines the height of the Cuban-South African fighting in Angola in 1987-88, when 3,000 South African soldiers and about 8,000 UNITA guerrilla fighters fought in alliance against the Cubans and the armed forces of the Marxist MPLA government, a force of over 50,000 men. Bridgland pieced together the course of the war, fought in one of the world's most remote and wild terrains, by interviewing the South Africans who fought it, and many of their accounts are woven into the narrative. This classic account of a Cold War struggle and its momentous consequences for the participants and across the continent, is released in a new edition with a new preface and epilogue. AUTHOR: Fred Bridgland, a graduate of St Andrew's University, is a British veteran foreign correspondent and author. He has reported on wars in India, Pakistan, the Middle East and Africa. In 1975 his discovery of South Africa's secret US-engineered invasion of Angola uncovered the CIA's involvement in one of Africa's longest wars, and was a world scoop. He has written a number of books, including Jonas Savimbi: A Key to Africa, and is currently writing a biography of Winnie Mandela. The story of the Cuban-South African war in Angola in 198788 through the eyes of the South Africans who fought in it. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
