He died in Rathgar, Dublin. He was captured in September, 1803, while on an intelligence-gathering operation at Brest, France. His second escape effort was successful. The remarkable story is enhanced by the editor's introduction and footnotes and the generous selection of illustrations, many reproduced in a full page format. Clean, unmarked copy.

In March 1808 Hewson and a fellow midshipman escaped and reached Airgues-Mortes in 30 days, only to be recaptured and sent to the notorious and dreaded Bitche. He again escaped and eventually made his way to safety in Austria. Brett-James' introduction describes Hewson's family background and explains the historical context. 192 pages.
