A Amsterdam, chez Gosse Junior, 1768 2 volumes in-12 (16,2 x 10 cm) de (6)-430 et (2)-373 pages. Reliure strictement de l'époque plein veau marbré caramel beurre salé, dos à nerfs orné aux petits fers dorés, pièces de titre de maroquin rouge, tomaisons de maroquin noir ornées de fers dorés, tranche mouchetées de rouge, armoiries dorées au centre des plats. Très belles reliures très bien conservées. Quelques petites marques à peine visibles. Un mors fendu en tête du second plat du premier volume, sans gravité pour la solidité de la reliure. Edition originale sous cette forme. Il est imprimé au verso des titres que ces deux volumes se trouvaient à Paris chez Durand, neveu ; Saillant, Delalain, Hansy, le jeune ; et Panckoucke. Ces Mémoires ont été imprimés pour la première fois en septembre 1696 au format in-quarto d'abord (2 volumes in-4), puis au format in-12 (3 volumes). Cette nouvelle édition ne respecte pas le texte de l'édition originale et de nombreux retranchements ont été opérés comme l'indique la préface : "On a cru rendre service au public en retranchant des Mémoires de M. de Bussy Rabutin, les réflexions prolixes qui arrêtent la narration, qui nuisent à l'intérêt de l'histoire et à l'impatiente curiosiré des lecteurs ; on a conservé précieusement la peinture des caractères des Hommes fameux et des Ministres qui existaient alors ; et tous les détails superflus ont été remplacés par les événements les plus intéressants du siècle : l'ordre et la réunion de ces faits appartiennent entièrement à l'éditeur. [.]". Cette édition a été donnée par un certain Le Bret, avocat au Parlement et censeur royal à Paris. Né en 1693, il était originaire de Beaune en Bourgogne, patrie de Bussy-Rabutin. Il est mort à Paris en 1772. On lui doit plusieurs ouvrages de littérature (in Biographie Universelle de Michaud, vol. 23, p. 493). D'après le Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonymes de Barbier, ces deux volumes auraient été imprimés à Lille (Barbier, 11773). On retrouve dans ces pages, outres les expéditions militaires et les intrigues de la Cour de Louis XIV, l'histoire de la diffusion de l'Histoire amoureuse des Gaules qui valut à son auteur un exil de plus de dix-sept années dans son château bourguignon de Bussy. On retrouve à la fin du deuxième volume les Maximes d'Amour de Bussy, et un plus curieusement un Abrégé de la vie de Descartes (qui n'est évidemment pas de Bussy mais de Le Bret en puisant dans es autres écrits sur Descartes). Provenance : exemplaire relié aux armes de Charles-François-Antoine de Barbarat de Mazirot (1740-1788), alors Président au Parlement de Metz (depuis 1764), avec sa signature autographe sur chacun des titres. Né le 14 avril 1740, il fut reçu conseiller le 21 juillet 1760 (à 20 ans) et président à mortier au Parlement de Metz le 16 août 1764 (à 24 ans) ; lors de la suppression des Parlements en 1771, il se vit dépouillé de sa charge et devint conseiller du roi en ses conseils et maître des requêtes, puis intendant de la généralité du Bourbonnais en 1784. Il mourut à Paris le 23 juillet 1788. Il avait épousé en premières noces Louise-Marie-Madeleine de Bellanger et en secondes noces, le 12 septembre 1784, Marie-Charlotte-Armande-Etiennette de Chastenay. Les armoiries de la famille Barbarat de Mazirot se lisent ainsi : d'azur au chevron d'or accompagné en chef de deux étoiles d'argent et en pointe d'une merlette du même (OHR, n°261 planche 1). Bel exemplaire, relié aux armes de Charles-François-Antoine de Barbarat de Mazirot (1740-1788), alors Président au Parlement de Metz, de cette édition intéressante, l'une des dernières du XVIIIe siècle.
