Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Alan Breese Ilustrador. First Edition. (price-clipped) [minor to book, but with a previous owner's name plus date & place of purchase and a brief comment in ink at the top of the front endpaper, and ink check-marks next to a number of chapter titles in the table of contents, and some scarring to the copyright page where a formerly-present paper strip has been removed; the jacket is a little age-tanned and lightl soiled, the price-clipping is a little extreme (resulting in the loss of a bit of the front jacket text), and there's a bit of damage at the top of the spine (with internal tape-reinforcement at both ends of the spine)]. (B&W photographs) The authors "have made a careful inquiry into the lives and characters of Susan Newell, who murdered a newspaper boy for ninepence; Louie Calvert from the slums of Leeds, who committed two murders but gained nothing; Ethel Major, unbalanced by years of domestic unhappiness; Nurse Waddingham and Charlotte Bryant, both mothers of five children, both executed in the same year; the strange Margaret Allen, the only one who never denied her guilt; and the two recent cases of the grasping Louisa Merrifield and the sinister Cypriot woman, Styllou Christofi. The book was already at the printers during the Ruth Ellis case and this ninth execution is dealt with in a Postscript. The authors give the facts of each murder, the life-story of each woman, and investigate the particular circumstances and emotions which influence them. Environments, mental limitations, social and domestic backgrounds are set in their proper perspective.".

When she approached a publisher with "Ordeal in Other Where," she was told that women didn't read science fiction and men didn't read books with female protagonists. The feedback didn't deter her. After her first publication, she never stopped writing. Norton spent nearly 7 decades writing in a dozen genres. Called "The Grande Dame of Science Fiction and Fantasy" she left behind a legacy of over 300 titles. Norton was the first woman to win The Gandalf Awards (1977), a lifetime achievement award for renowned fantasy writers. Later winners would include Ursula K. LeGuin (1979) and Ray Bradbury (1980). She was also the first woman to be inducted in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 1997, alongside Arthur C. Clarke, H.G. Wells and Issac Asimov. She worked as a reader for Gnome Press and ran a small book store called "Mystery House." It is a truth universally acknowledged that Andre Norton loved cats. Dust jacket in Near Fine condition and encased in archival cover.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Jacket by Alan Breese Ilustrador. 1st Edition. First UK edition, first impression. Some slight edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of largely bright red jacket and spine, minuscule fading to spine, corners rubbed with tiny loss, not price clipped (21/-), small previous owner's name to ffep, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 267pp. The Stones, a family of 'Loonies' (residents of the Moon, known as 'Luna' in the book, from the Roman goddess), purchase and rebuild a used spaceship and go sightseeing around the Solar System. The twin teenage boys, named Castor and Pollux after the half brothers of classical legend, buy used bicycles on Luna to sell on Mars, their first stop, where they run afoul of local regulations but are freed by their grandmother Hazel Stone. While on Mars, the twins buy their brother Buster a native Martian creature called a flat cat, which produces a soothing vibration, as a pet. In preparation for the asteroid belt, where the equivalent of a gold rush is in progress prospecting for 'core material' and radioactive ores, the twins obtain supplies and luxury goods on Mars to sell at their destination, on the principle that it is shopkeepers, not miners, who get rich during gold rushes. En route the flat cat and its offspring overpopulate the ship so the family places them in hibernation and later sells them to the miners. The novel ends with the family setting out to see the rings of Saturn. One of Robert Heinlein's (1907-88), sci fi novels for young adults. A scarce book in this first UK impression.

This book is remarkable in Golden Age science fiction for avoiding romance between the two (primarily through their age difference), though Pee Wee does occasionally have to scold Kip for the inefficiencies his ideas of chivalry create at times. Añadir al carritoCloth. Condición: Near Fine. FIRST EDITION, with TLS & POSTCARD LAID IN. 8vo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Top edge spotted. A little musty, else, clean and tight. One-page TLS on white A4 paper (29. April 1981) addressed "Dearest John", with Lucas's Swan Cottage, Rackham letterhead printed in black, and signed "Love as ever, Bar" and two-sided hand-written postcard (12 Jan. 85) in blue biro and again to "Dearest John," laid in. In the Alan Breese-designed illustrated dust jacket, printed in olive, black and pink: spine sunned, a little rubbed and creased at edges. Near fine/ very good A lovely, bright copy of the English Catholic intellectual and writer Barbara Lucas' sixth novel, "a very 1969 romance; [with] a very 1969 hero and heroine," with affectionate later correspondence addressed to "Dearest John" laid in. Barbara Wall (19112009), who wrote under her maiden name Lucas, was, like her husband Bernard and her grandparents before her, a Catholic intellectual: she was the granddaughter of Wilfrid and Alice Meynell (as well as the niece of Punch editor E. V. Lucas). With her husband she founded the Catholic Worker newspaper in Britain and was "active in organizations linked to Catholic peace traditions". Three years after this novel was published, in 1972, she was awarded the Benemerenti Medal for her work for peace. She was also a translator of French and wrote a biography of Rene Hague. According to the PO, Lucas' addressee was John Vernon, a former MI5 agent and international civil servant with NATO, who had served with 'D' Section (General Intelligence) of the Psychological Warfare Branch (PWB) in Italy during WWII. This seems credible and certainly fits with both the mention of his wife Susanna (the pioneer conference interpreter) in Lucas' correspondence, as well as mutual friends (alive and deceased), including Esmé and Mondi Howard and Muriel Grindrod. Gabriel [formerly Wall] and her husband Bernard Bergonzi are also mentioned, including news of her death shortly after Christmas day 1984. The Bernard and Barbara Wall Papers are held by the Booth Family Center for Special Collections, Georgetown University, Washington. The Private Papers of Major J A B Vernon OBE are held by the Imperial War Museum, London.
