Although manyliterary scholars have alluded to the impenetrabilityof Aichinger s works, few attempts have been made toinvestigate the meaning of her texts.In his theory of aesthetic response, Wolfgang Iserexplains that literary works contain vacancies in thesystem of the text that need to be filled by thereader s imagination. They serve as an impetus forthe reader to draw together apparently unrelated orconflicting textual aspects. Thus, the reader createsthe meaning through interaction with the text.This work explores the applicability of Iser s theoryto Aichinger s works to determine whether they leavespace for the reader to create meaning. Selectedtexts are analyzed in an attempt to dissolve theirimpenetrability and show how the meaning comes tolife through an Iserian reading. In providing abetter understanding of both Iser s theory andAichinger s texts this book addresses literaryscholars as well as interested readers.
